CTA IN ACTION: Caltrans Approves Longtime CTA Request

Earlier last week, Caltrans formally adopted a new policy that will be included in their Transportation Permits Policy Manual. The policy change will now allow haulers/drivers operating under an Annual Transportation Permit to carry and display the "Weekly Short-term Restrictions for Annual Permit Holders (Weekly Restrictions) in either printed or electronic form.

The printed or electronic Weekly Restrictions must be (a) legible, and (b) contain no alterations. What this means is that the driver can display the document(s) via electronically to a law enforcement representative using an acceptable electronic device (IE: laptop, tablet or smartphone). For now, the policy only applies to Weekly Restrictions/Annuals. All other permit accompaniments must be printed and in the driver’s immediate possession. I am emphasizing for now, because CTA, CHP and Caltrans will continue to work on expanding the use of an electronic device for single trip permits. Until that happens it only pertains to annual holders.

For the past few years CTA and CTA members Heavy Transport and Marco Transport worked with the CHP and Caltrans on making this policy change happen. Although it doesn’t include the allowance for single trip permits it’s a big first step. CTA would also like to thank longtime CTA member Doug Murray (Murray Trailers) for having the foresight for the heavy haul industry to have the ability to utilize electronic devices after obtaining a transportation permit. This project was a priority for the California Transportation Permit Advisory Council (CTPAC) which lists CTA as the Chairperson of the group and is represented by many CTA heavy specialized carrier members and also includes the CHP and Caltrans. If you’re interested in joining the CTPAC group let me know.
