On Friday, October 13, more than 400 attendees participated in the 2017 Commercial Vehicle Safety Summit (CVSS), hosted by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) in Newport Beach, CA.

At the Summit, the CHP presented members of the California Trucking Association (CTA) with the Safe Transportation Achievement Recognition (STAR) award, which formally recognizes California motor carriers and drivers in the truck and bus industry for their efforts in making safety a priority in their day-to-day operations.

CTA member Apex Bulk Commodities, LLC was recognized in the Truck-General Freight, more than 20 power units category and Ventura Transfer Company was recognized in the Truck-Hazardous Materials, more than 20 power units category, for their commitment to safety.

Additionally, Michael Walter with Apex Bulk Commodities, LLC received the STAR Driver Safety Award, which recognizes individual commercial drivers who have built a career with safety as their foundation.

"We are very proud of Mike, who has been a commercial driver with us since 1992," said Denny Wyatt, Apex's Vice President. "He anticipates the actions of other drivers and understands the importance of sharing the road and defensible space. His commitment to safety is demonstrated through the more than 2.6 million accident-free miles logged."

The CVSS is an all-day event focused solely on promoting safety in the commercial vehicle industry. It is held every other year and is the only event of its kind in the nation.

"CTA is proud to be a major contributor to this event with the CHP to recognize the importance of safety in the trucking industry and the role of trucking companies and their individual drivers," said Shawn Yadon, CTA's CEO. "We are proud of Ventura Transfer Company, Apex and Mike for their commitment to safety. They are outstanding examples for the industry as trucking strives to transport goods in a safe and efficient manner throughout our state."
