Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals

Current News

Catchy title? Maybe it is, but that’s just an attempt to keep you reading on. I really want to acknowledge you as a very important part of CSCMP and all that we stand for together…as a member of this great organization. I do believe that your decision to be a part of the global community of supply chain practitioners and academics who make up CSCMP says a lot about who you are. You care about your personal brand, your development, and maximizing your competency and capability. Yes, that’s better than a manicure! May is member appreciation month. And I want you to hear it from me personally; you are very much appreciated!

Through all of the pressing challenges and dynamics that came about as a result of a global geo-political shift that began in 2018 to the Pandemic of 2020, supply chain professionals became front-and-center in the call to respond. From pulling out all the stops to keep operations running to now improving supply chain resiliency and inserting value added redundancy, we had to create new processes and innovate like never before. As a result, CSCMP has and continues to see expanded growth in membership like never before as you, our members, seek the necessary knowledge and access to networks to advance your development and that of your supply chain.

The supply chain will continue to advance in process and technology innovation. I would imagine that this will occur at a pace far greater in this decade than perhaps we’ve ever seen before. CSCMP is here to help you in your journey and we are very pleased to be that resource to help you achieve your goals.

This September we will return to a live and in-person EDGE conference in Atlanta, Georgia. There is no turning back! I can tell you personally that momentum for the live conference is building among our membership, and we have the commitments from the best in the business to appear and deliver cutting-edge, innovative concepts and thought leadership on your behalf. I look forward to seeing you there and sharing more appreciation for your membership in this great global organization.

My best regards,

Mark S. Baxa

A new study by ToolsGroup, a global leader in supply chain planning software, and the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) has found that only 3% of companies experienced no COVID-19-related business impact, and 42% of organizations say the pandemic has accelerated their digitization plans. Additionally, the majority (90%) are somewhere along the digital journey, but talent deficits threaten to slow progress, with 42% of respondents saying they are handing staff/skills shortages poorly or very poorly.

CSCMP and ToolsGroup surveyed more than 200 supply chain professionals around the world from manufacturing, retail, consumer packaged goods, aftermarket parts, wholesale-distribution, and third-party logistics (3PL) firms, as well as consulting organizations. One hundred percent of those who said they were already reaping the benefits of digital transformation said that they were managing COVID-19-related demand and supplier uncertainty "very well." Of those who said they were "executing," 94% responded "very well." However, only 60% of those in the ‘evaluating’ stage reported handling this area "very well," indicating that digital technology and processes are enabling better management of disruption Download the FREE Report to read the full study.

Nowadays, machine learning seems to be everywhere you look, from television commercials and supply chain conferences to university degrees. But despite its buzzword status and the fact that it’s been around since the late 1950s, this technology is still shrouded in mystery for many supply chain practitioners. According to Gartner, “While machine learning promises transformational benefits in the supply chain, current expectations of short-term readiness and benefits remain unrealistic.”1 In this hyped-up stage in technology maturity, it’s crucial to be well informed so you can see beyond the headlines and apply the technology correctly to solve business problems and deliver real value.

According to the April Logistics Manager's Index®, the LMI index is 74.5, up from March’s reading of 72.2. This is the highest score for the overall index in the last two years, and the second highest overall score in the history of the index. This is approximately a 50% increase from a year ago, when the April reading came in at 51.3. The rapid rates of growth are driven by high rates of price expansion and record-high inventory costs.
