A Message from CSCMP President & CEO Mark Baxa

Gone, for now, are the days when supply chain executives had ample time to ponder the future and strategize about intangible ideas like innovation, optimization, and competitive advantage. Today’s chief supply chain officers are instead knee-deep in fundamental blocking and tackling activities like managing their logistics spend and solving both inventory shortages and insurmountable challenges coming from every direction...and more tomorrow!

That’s as uncomfortable of a scenario as it is an opportunity. As supply chain professionals, we're at our best when disciplined, fine-tuned business processes operate within the body of knowledge and systems we understand. But the lookback is not where supply chain lives—that’s history. What we learn and use to shape the future is the measure of success.

Feeling daunted by challenges you’re facing in your supply chain? Tap into the performance-lifting resources offered by your industry association, CSCMP. Smart leaders know that to succeed, they need to continuously learn, and they need access to peers who are working to solve the same supply chain challenges. From ScPro™ Fundamentals, news-breaking analysis of domestic and global supply chain processes, applicable research, countless pro-to-practitioner events, and many other forms of competency and capability building opportunities, CSCMP is your place to speed up your learning & development pace.

Insight and innovation do continue, and one of the best ways to access the leaders of leaders is through face-to-face events, like CSCMP’s annual supply chain conference and exhibition, EDGE.

This year, EDGE will be even more important for supply chain professionals because the sessions, solutions, and peer discussions are solving for problems that practitioners are facing now, not down the road. A 15-minute discussion over coffee may solve one of the issues keeping you up at night. Can you really afford to miss that? Even better, bring a team to divide and conquer, attending as many sessions as possible and return to your company with actionable ideas and tools to achieve tangible ROI this year.

This is also the time to develop talent. From sharpening the fundamentals of supply chain knowledge to collecting new, cutting-edge innovation that can be obtained and implemented through new business processes and partnerships. Sending your team to EDGE, investing in one of CSCMP’s on-demand training and development programs, curating a customized face-to-face training for your high-potential team members, or onboarding your entire supply chain team into the peer community of CSCMP with a corporate membership are all fantastic and inexpensive ways to both develop and provide value to your workforce.

As your professional association, CSCMP is committed to developing and arming supply chain professionals to be successful in their pursuit of excellence throughout their careers, as well as advancing our discipline and accomplishing CSCMP’s mission of a truly integrated, end-to-end supply chain.

Don't miss out on all these opportunities to engage, learn, mentor ,and be at the cutting edge of supply chain thought leadership! Learn more about the opportunities mentioned above at cscmp.org

A CSCMP and ToolsGroup Collaboration

The third annual study by the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) and ToolsGroup, a global leader in supply chain planning, has found that while more companies than ever (93%) are actively engaged in digital transformation, the people/skills deficit is the number one obstacle (52%) standing in the way of their efforts.

With respondents’ top growth investment for 2022 being “increasing recruitment and training efforts,” this year’s study reveals the profound effect that current labor shortages are having on digital supply chain transformation.

From January to March 2022, CSCMP and ToolsGroup surveyed more than 300 supply chain professionals around the world. While most companies started 2022 with a positive business outlook, they remain extremely concerned about external factors that have impacted supply chain planning strategies in the last two years. Supply chain delays (25%), surging inflation (24%) and escalating fulfillment costs (19%) top the list of external concerns. In comparison, respondents were less concerned about internal issues such as shorter product life cycles, risk of obsolescence, or more production options.
Research for the 27th Annual Third-Party Logistics Study is underway! Report partners released the survey this month and given the current volatility shippers and logistics providers are facing, we're eager to hear your feedback! The 2023 study topics include:
  • Reverse logistics
  • Talent management
  • Back-to-basics
  • Contemporary issues
Results will be released at the EDGE 2022 Supply Chain Conference & Exhibition in Nashville this September. More information on EDGE is available at cscmpedge.org.

The Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) Annual State of Logistics Report®, presented by Penske Logistics and authored by Kearney, is scheduled to release next month on June 20, 2022 in Washington, D.C.

The coronavirus pandemic both created new problems and highlighted existing issues across the supply chain. This has been especially evident at the ports. Unrelenting port congestion—coupled with equipment shortages—has made importing goods an irritating headache at best and an expensive nightmare at worst.

Navigating today’s supply chain woes is not impossible, but it does require a new approach. Companies that have historically treated drayage and other inland transportation services as an afterthought will need to shift this mindset in order to survive in the current maritime environment.

Thank you to CSCMP Corporate Member Brian Kempisty of Port X Logistics for sharing this CSCMP Hot Topic.

The American Logistics Aid Network (ALAN) has officially opened nominations for its sixth annual Humanitarian Logistics Awards, and asks for your help in identifying some of this year’s most deserving honorees.

“Many humanitarian efforts couldn’t happen or happen as well without the generosity of the commercial supply chain community,” said ALAN Executive Director Kathy Fulton. “These awards were created to shine a light on that generosity and to honor our industry’s most selfless companies and individuals. We clearly know who some of them are because we’ve worked hand-in-hand with them to help provide disaster relief. However there are many others that we won’t be aware of—and able to honor—unless someone takes the time to nominate them.”

ALAN’s Humanitarian Logistics Awards are open to any logistics professional, academic, organization or department. They are awarded in four key categories, each of which can have multiple honorees:
  • Outstanding Contribution To Humanitarian Logistics
  • Employee Engagement
  • Research And Academic Contributions
  • And Lifetime Achievement
Nominations will be accepted now through June 30th. Winners will be announced this fall.

Chicago Roundtable
"I rejoined CSCMP at the beginning of 2021 to broaden my network of resources to provide to existing clients, stay up-to-date on new trends and new information that is impacting the supply chain, and to network with other members who may require information on industrial real estate locally and/or nationally. I originally joined CSCMP in 2014 and attended several national conferences and local events during that membership period.

Attend as many events as possible, both in person and virtually to meet other members and obtain current information on what issues are impacting the supply chain world. The most valuable membership benefits are meeting new contacts who could be potential resources for my customers, and networking with potential new customers."

Chicago Roundtable
"I (officially) became a member of CSCMP circa 2016, shortly after joining the Uber Freight team in Chicago. But, prior to officially joining, I honestly can't recall how many times I heard "CSCMP" mentioned throughout the earlier chapters of my career.

While at C.H. Robinson, I started to become more intrigued by the CSCMP mission. I've always been an avid believer in collaboration and professional networking, so anytime the opportunity to discuss industry topics and share innovative ideas with fellow practitioners arises, I'm typically seeking a sign-up form. CSCMP was certainly no exception in this regard.

Network, network, network! CSCMP is one of the absolute most unique opportunities to engage with fellow SCM professionals. There's a wealth of knowledge out there, and this organization is an optimal means to learn and grow.

And as in life, what you put in is ultimately what you'll get out. In addition to attending the annual EDGE event, there are multiple roundtable events and other outings at the local/chapter level. I've made countless connections throughout my CSCMP journey, with each connection providing a lasting impact. From my very first EDGE conference, I knew this was an event I would attend year after year. In fact, I attribute much of my own career progression to the knowledge and professional contacts I've gained through CSCMP. I'm truly grateful."

As we (hopefully) begin to emerge from the worst of the pandemic, supply chain leaders are realizing that their traditional sales and operations planning (S&OP) process is no longer sufficient to keep pace with today’s dynamic changes. This does not mean, however, that companies need to toss aside their carefully crafted S&OP processes and meetings. Rather they need to make sure that a complementary process—sales and operations execution—is also robust.

According to the April Logistics Manager’s Index Report®, the overall index came in at 69.7. While this  represents a significant rate of growth and exceeds the all-time average of 65.3, it is down significantly from March’s all-time high of 76.2. This reading marks the first time since January 2021 that the overall index has come in lower than 70.0 – ending the streak of consecutive readings over 70 at 14. This dip is largely due to changes in the transportation market, which has softened significantly given decreased consumer demand and high diesel prices encouraging more efficient shipping.

Despite the slowdown, respondents are predicting a future growth rate of 67.8 over the next 12 months, down from March’s future prediction of 70.2.
