The CSCMP Board of Directors and its Officers unanimously voted Mark Baxa as the full-time President & CEO at its June 2022 Board of Director meeting. Lee Beard, CSCMP Board Chair states that “Mark has filled the role during the past 16 months in an interim capacity and has led the organization through a challenging 2021, just as society as a whole came through a difficult economic and socially challenging period due to COVID-19. In his short tenure as interim President & CEO, Mark has set the stage for significant advancements in our organization's future through enhanced global presence, industry collaboration, content curation, CSCMP member and guest benefits. Mark brings many years of service in supply chain leadership roles and that of CSCMP with him, including serving at the Roundtable, Board of Directors, and in all elected Board Officer roles, including Chairman of the Board in 2019. He is a tremendous supply chain leader and all-encompassing knowledge expert, known around the world as a people builder and recognized supply chain executive and speaker. The 2022 State of Logistics Report was unveiled today at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., with the 33rd annual publication finding that U.S.-based supply chains are out of sync, while adjusting to short-term changes and perhaps uncovering long-term solutions. It is produced annually for the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) by global consulting firm Kearney and presented by Penske Logistics.
The publication delivers a snapshot of the American economy through the lens of the logistics sector and its role in overall supply chains. The report is a rigorous compilation of leading logistics intelligence from around the world and shines a spotlight on industry trends and key insights on ever-evolving supply chains across a number of sectors.
A key statistic that the report generates is the United States business logistics costs, or USBLC. In 2021, USBLC was elevated by 22.4% to $1.85 trillion, representing 8% of 2021’s $23 trillion GDP.
Some major report findings revealed:
- Business inventories dropped to near historic lows, but the costs associated with storing, handling and finance for these items rose considerably. Inventory-carrying costs rose by 25.9% in 2021, and transportation costs jumped 21.7%. This led to uneven supply chains and inconsistent product availability for consumers (both in-person and online).
- Efforts to increase multi-shoring are expected to accelerate. Companies are seeking to have operations move closer to the U.S., to respond quicker to fluctuating market demands.
- Last year’s report noted the effects of the pandemic on the supply chain. The residual challenges of the pandemic remain, with some disruptions continuing to deliver damaging effects on capacity.
- Last-mile delivery volume is trending upward. The 2022 report notes that e-commerce sales grew 10% last year (to $871 billion), accounting for 14% of U.S. retail sales.
- Trucking freight continues to see more volume and opportunities. With road freight accounting for the largest segment of the U.S. supply chain spend, it expanded by 23.4%, to a lofty $831 billion spend.

The thought of the transportation broker going to the wayside or the hype of Uber (May 2017) taking over makes me wonder, “what is next?” I don’t see people being replaced by robots or freight loading and delivery without people involved. Based on my observations, I don’t expect most people today to see this either. It will have all been a dream – a dream that will lead to many efficiencies in our industry, but a dream, nonetheless. The reality is the present-day brokerage is no longer a simple transaction conducted over the phone with a simple handshake and thermal fax machine. The brokerage, like many business models nowadays, will continue to evolve, but the reality is that none of this can happen without people involved.

The American Logistics Aid Network (ALAN) has officially opened nominations for its sixth annual Humanitarian Logistics Awards, and asks for your help in identifying some of this year’s most deserving honorees.
“Many humanitarian efforts couldn’t happen or happen as well without the generosity of the commercial supply chain community,” said ALAN Executive Director Kathy Fulton. “These awards were created to shine a light on that generosity and to honor our industry’s most selfless companies and individuals. We clearly know who some of them are because we’ve worked hand-in-hand with them to help provide disaster relief. However there are many others that we won’t be aware of – and able to honor – unless someone takes the time to nominate them.”
ALAN’s Humanitarian Logistics Awards are open to any logistics professional, academic, organization or department. They are awarded in four key categories, each of which can have multiple honorees:
- Outstanding Contribution To Humanitarian Logistics
- Employee Engagement
- Research/Academic Contributions
- Lifetime Achievement
Nominations will be accepted now through June 30. Winners will be announced this fall.

Disruption has never left our sight. For years, we have faced disruptive events to supply chains in the form of capacity issues, blank sailings, missing transshipment vessels, extreme weather, and geopolitical conflict [1].
Enter the global pandemic – of which its aftermath quite easily eclipses the disruption [2] caused by any of these events above.
We have seen how global supply chains have faltered, how ports stay congested for days and weeks, and how shipments remain stuck at terminals because of limited in-land transportation and logistics network support.
Shanghai’s lockdown and the knock-on impact on other ports
On April 11, Shanghai tightened its COVID stance to a city-wide lockdown. From mid- to end- April, Spire Maritime’s Automatic Identification System (AIS) data revealed an increase and eventually a peak in the average delays of container vessels to the terminal in both Shanghai and Ningbo ports across Year-To-Date (YTD) data.
In Shanghai, the average delays of container vessels to the terminal increased from 33.3h per day in the first week of April, to its peak in the third week of April with an average delay of container vessels to terminal at 66.8h per day. In Ningbo, the average delays of container vessels to the terminal increased from 30.7h per day in the first week of April to 39.1h per day in the third week of April, peaking in the fourth week of April with an average delay of container vessels to terminal at 58.0h per day.

According to the May Logistics Manager’s Index Report®, the overall index is at 67.1, down from April’s reading of 69.7 and March’s all-time high reading of 76.2. While this is the lowest reading of the overall index since December 2020, it's above the all-time average of 65.3. The slowing rate of growth can be contributed to a softening in the transportation market. High inventories and a continued lack of sufficient warehousing space is keeping the overall index at a clear rate of expansion.
Respondents expect a steady rate of expansion over the next year, and anticipating a growth rate of 66.0.
