What a start! Who could’ve predicted that 2020 would bring unforecasted pivots, unimaginable challenges, a global impact on supply, demand, and people, with a simultaneous influx of new technologies?
2020 delivered another year of change, innovation, and growth for supply chains. The COVID-19 pandemic has lasted longer than anyone could have imagined, and throughout it, our supply chains, I believe, have shown resilience. Here in the U.S. there were shortages of many different products early on, as millions of Americans shifted to working and learning from home. Instead of consuming food and paper goods in schools and restaurants, they began shopping differently and fulfilling these needs from home. That huge shift in demand was met by our supply chains, exhibiting the resilience to get back in business and minimize disruption.
As we look ahead, the past nine months are undoubtedly shaping how organizations and professionals alike are planning for the year ahead. Savvy supply chain professionals are learning from the past to prepare for events in the future. 2020 certainly provided opportunities for learning and improvement, even for all of us that have been in supply chain for decades. We've never seen anything like this, but certainly we will learn from it. We will develop new partners, and we will move ahead with even more resilient, flexible and agile supply chains all around the world.
What are the lessons I take away from last year? First, all the professionals in supply chain management know they need to be ready for the unexpected, to prepare for scenarios that are unlikely, and to respond with agility and flexibility to ensure our customers are served. And yes, at the lowest possible total delivered cost, which is one of the main foundations of modern-day supply chain management. Together, as we start 2021, look at your supply chains and the magnificent people who lead and manage them. Review takeaways and lessons from the past year, explore the unique opportunities and ways of serving customers that were born out of necessity and determine if they can be employed and leveraged in the new year. The creativity that responded to the unpredictable may have resulted in a new way of doing business.
A new year allows for reflection. Take the good and start with optimism, remember that people are the most important aspect in any supply chain. Tools and technology will also be evolving and available, but leadership is difficult to replace. We have seen significant leadership throughout this pandemic. It is always the people that make it happen. Stay connected with your teams, industry peers, and the supply chain community. Tap into CSCMP, your professional association, for a network of peers that can support and inspire you through good times and bad. Invest the time to engage and make the most of opportunities like EDGE, CSCMP's annual conference, or local roundtable events. You will make contacts that will be there when you need them; you will be a friend, peer and business resource for others.

The supply chain is essential to business; it must continue to function despite uncertainty, disruption, and tight budgets. Unfortunately, the freight market—worth roughly $800 billion annually to the U.S. economy—is still reliant on legacy systems and methods of operation.
In fact, an overwhelming 80% of carrier invoices contain some kind of discrepancy, according to American Shipper. And 15% to 20% of the freight invoice inaccuracies were overcharges by the carrier.

2020 HAS BEEN QUITE A YEAR FOR ALL OF humanity. We’ll likely be recounting stories about the pandemic in the same way that we talk about World War II, September 11, and other life-altering world events.
Arguably, the retail industry has faced some of the most significant pandemic-driven impacts in the shortest amount of time. Before the pandemic, e-commerce accounted for 13% of the retail sales in the United States. Given store closures and social-distancing measures, we can safely say that percentage has now more than doubled. For example, Stripe, an e-commerce payments platform, went from handling $1 billion in payments last year to more than $10 billion in transactions in the first six months of 2020. A potential 20x growth!
In many cases, consumer shopping habits may have changed for good. Take for an example how my own family buys groceries. We have gone from shopping solely in-store (Trader Joe’s, farmers market, and Whole Foods) to getting groceries delivered to us each week from Whole Foods (owned by Amazon) and Costco (delivered by Instacart). I’ve noticed that (after a rocky start) the quality of service provided has improved significantly over the course of this year: from having to wait up to a week for a delivery slot for Whole Foods to having food delivered to my doorstep in less than two hours. The question my family—and many others—is now asking is this: Will we ever go back to the grocery store? Is it worth it to lose two hours of precious weekend time to shop in a physical store?

Call for Sessions will begin January 22 and run through March 1, 2021. The conference will be a hybrid event. The virtual component will have a limited agenda. The in-person event at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta will have a full agenda.
Accepted session topics must align with these core tracks
and you must agree to present in-person as all core tracks will be presented in-person only. All session submissions are reviewed and evaluated by the EDGE Conference Committee and then passed to the 2021 Class of Track Chairs for consideration. No submission is ever guaranteed. Here are some guidelines to consider before submitting your session idea:
- The session submitter must be a CSCMP member.
- All intended presenters must be confirmed and listed in the submission.
- Submissions are required to be educational and application-based (case studies, data, and research/white papers) to offer the most value to our attendees.
- Sales pitches or selling of one’s company or services will not be considered.
- Service providers, consultants or academics may not present alone. A customer (retailer/manufacturer/shipper) must actively participate in the session.
- Companies may not present more than once across tracks and can only present once within a given track.
- 3rd party submissions via sales/marketing agencies are not accepted.
