Thoughts shared by the winners of the Supply Chain Innovation Award Winners: The Intel Team of Mani Janakiram & David Bayba on winning the CSCMP 2018 Supply Chain Innovation Award:

Intel is delighted and honored to win the 2018 CSCMP Supply Chain Innovation Award. There was a perfect storm of circumstances that both created the need for and enabled the innovation. These circumstances are not unique to Intel which is why we believe that our innovation award submission was a particularly compelling case study that resonated among many great submissions from other companies.  In this brief article, we will provide a little background on the work.

The Changing Environment

Intel has been transitioning from a pc-centric company to a data-centric company. Through various decisions and investments, Intel has entered data-rich markets positioning it to serve a formidable total addressable market (TAM) that some industry analysts consider as large as $300B. This transformation has greatly increased Intel’s diversity of products which in turn has resulted in an explosion in supply management complexity. Simultaneously, competitive pressures are as high if not higher than they have ever been; accordingly, employing more resources to manage the additional work is not a viable solution.  Innovation is a requirement to provide next-generation supply chain solutions!
Year after year, the CSCMP EDGE Conference is considered supply chain's premier event™ and is recognized consistently by third-party publications. CSCMP is proud to be recognized by Logistics Viewpoints as one of the best logistics and supply chain shows to attend in all of 2019!

The winners of the 2018 Emerging Leaders Award demonstrate that the future of supply chain management is in capable hands.

Millennials often get a bad rap. Their work ethic is questioned. Their reliance on technology disparaged. And their sense of entitlement mocked. They are even blamed for the "death" of everything from shopping malls and cereal to golf and home ownership.

But spend some time with just a few of today's leading young supply chain professionals, and you will see how empty those fears and stereotypes are. For the past several years, the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals' (CSCMP) Young Professionals Committee has recognized two or three supply chain professionals under the age of 35 who are already making a mark on the profession. This year's Emerging Leader Award winners are: Kimberly Caron of Peerless Plastics, Bo Liao of Western Digital Corporation, and Chris Ricciardi of Logistical Labs. The three were chosen because of their personal career accomplishments and their record of achievement in the supply chain profession, as evidenced by awards, peer recognition and recommendations.

The award winners were honored at CSCMP's 2018 Annual Conference in Nashville, TN. Here they reflect on their careers so far as well as their future aspirations.

Training and Development

As leaders, there comes a point in the progression of our careers where our value is inherent in our ability to make effective business decisions. And with today’s disruptions, making decisions that are informed, connected, and effective is key to survival. Yet, the irony is that few leaders have had any formal training or education in this area. Consequently, leaders often make decisions based on values and biases developed through personal experience in the form of successes and failures. This means decisions made by senior leaders can vary based on the individual – versus senior leaders having a unified approach based on an extended value stream perspective.

Join CSCMP Europe and LeanCor Supply Chain Group as we discuss the evolution of leadership-level decision making in today’s disruptive business environment. We will highlight how changes in your decision-making strategy can benefit your business from an end-to-end perspective, and how to stay current and profitable with a connected enterprise.

Today, I am writing to help Shippers learn a very difficult language – Insurance.

That’s right. Insurance. I have been underwriting for more than 30 years in transportation and I am a partner with one the largest underwriters of logistics insurance nationally, and I can confirm that the insurance industry has done a poor job communicating even basic insurance nomenclature to shippers. As a result, the insurance and subsequent indemnification requirements are often incorrect in contracts.

So, let’s start with the obvious. Shippers would like and often require that a carrier (trucker) or intermediary (truck broker) indemnify them for any and all loss involving the transportation of the shipper’s cargo. Furthermore, shippers require that there be insurance in place to back up that indemnification. This makes sense and is a fair request.

The approach to deliver disruptive high-tech products in today’s dynamic business environment has dramatically changed over the last decade. It is no longer sufficient for companies to rely on traditional product management and engineering capabilities to win in the marketplace. The frontlines of the high-tech product launch battle are now happening much earlier in the value chain. Today, years before commercial launch, companies are clashing to acquire talent, create customer demand, promote brand awareness, increase enterprise value and raise capital. The development and execution of Pre-Launch Product Mobilization (PLPM©) strategies for the burgeoning autonomous industry are just as important as the final product itself. And participating in the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is a key venue to mobilize your autonomous program for long-term strategic and financial success.

Get the latest Logistics Manager Index (LMI) for December. The LMI is calculated using a diffusion index, in which any reading above 50 percent indicates that logistics is expanding; a reading below 50 percent is indicative of a shrinking logistics industry.

The LMI score is a combination of all of the other components that make up the index including inventory levels and costs, warehousing capacity, utilization, and prices, and transportation capacity, utilization and prices.
