One of the biggest highlights for the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) in 2018, was the announcement that CSCMP and the National Shippers Strategic Transportation Council (NASSTRAC) were forming a partnership merging the two associations.
As a CSCMP member, what does that mean for you?
First, some background. Both NASSTRAC and CSCMP have been around for a long time, since 1952 and 1963, respectively. While the association world is changing rapidly and becoming crowded with associations representing overlapping issues, companies have fewer discretionary dollars to spend on training and education. Given CSCMP’s unique focus as the one, true, end-to-end supply chain association and NASSTRAC’s in-depth focus on transportation, the partnership is a good match. It will benefit both associations and, more importantly, add value and relevance to our members.
There are important synergies between CSCMP and NASSTRAC, and we can help each other in very meaningful ways. As this partnership deepens, our goal is to take a comprehensive look at the transportation function as it exists within the supply chain today and identify current needs in terms of education and skill development. Together, we will generate more relevant content and education, more advocacy, and more opportunities to engage locally and through the annual EDGE
Government advocacy is one of the major differences between CSCMP and NASSTRAC. Because of the work NASSTRAC does on advocacy, membership with NASSTRAC is limited to corporations, while CSCMP allows for many categories of memberships, including both individuals and corporations.

On October 3, 2018, Intel, with team members Mani Janakiram, Director, Supply Chain Intelligence and Analytics, Global Supply Chain Management, Intel, and David Bayba, Data Scientist, Global Supply Chain Management, Intel, were announced as the winners of the 2018 Supply Chain Innovation Award (SCIA) at the 2018 EDGE Conference held in Nashville, TN.
It was an intense competition with other finalists, BuySeasons/FastFetch, Kansas City Southern Railway Company, Pfizer, and Schneider Electric (R&D)/Vector Consulting all submitting innovative and groundbreaking achievements in supply chain.
The SCIA is a live competition in which a panel of judges join EDGE Conference attendees to hear presentations on innovative solutions and real-world results form top supply chain companies. The competition is held throughout the week of the EDGE Conference and winners were announced on the final day at the closing session.
CSCMP and SupplyChainBrain are currently welcoming entries for the 15th Annual SCIA competition. Submissions consist of case studies describing your company's supply chain innovation that emphasize innovative and measurable results. Finalists are asked to present their case studies at CSCMP's 2019 EDGE Conference in Anaheim, CA.
This award program receives approximately 50 submissions each year. A panel of reviewers, consisting of members of CSCMP's Research Strategies Committee and the editorial board of SupplyChainBrain, narrow down those submissions to the top innovative teams who then become the finalists at CSCMP's Annual Conference.

Esri, the global leader in GIS, location intelligence, and mapping, today announced that market research firm Forrester recognized the company in The Forrester Wave™: Location Intelligence Platforms, Q4 2018 Evaluation. The report acknowledges, in our opinion, Esri’s leadership in location intelligence technology and highlights the company’s long-term commitment to innovation in its market-leading geospatial cloud.
The Forrester report notes, “Esri’s vision for location intelligence is to help organizations understand why things happen where and when they happen, with the goal of gaining business advantage through better understanding. By continuing to evolve [its] ArcGIS [platform], Esri is pushing beyond the traditional GIS markets that it has long dominated into the location intelligence market.”
“While ArcGIS has long been recognized as a comprehensive system for spatial data analytics and visualization in the public sector, we think Forrester’s recognition reinforces that it is also the go-to enterprise system for the private sector,” said Jack Dangermond, Esri founder and president.
In the report, authored by James McCormick, Emily Miller, Gene Leganza, and Robert Perdoni, Esri received the highest ranking in the “Strategy” and “Market Presence” categories. Esri also received the highest score among all evaluated vendors in the spatial visualization and analytics criterion.

While he was talking to the real estate agent, I was noting down the important points from their conversation on my cell phone. I showed them later to my friend and he was amused.
This book is helpful for new students/starters in the supply chain management profession, entrepreneurs, project/general management professionals and salespeople also as they need to interact with supply chain people of other companies. In a nutshell, it is not just another textbook, but a practical handbook.

• Even though 71 percent of manufacturing leaders believe time and motion studies are very or fairly important data sources, 43 percent aren’t confident in the data these studies yield.
What this means is that digital transformation strategies must extend to the last analog frontier: humans. Drishti makes it possible to create massive datasets about human tasks. Together, we are creating and launching ambitious digital transformation strategies that arm manufacturers with valuable insights about their labor force.

The Journal of Business Logistics (JBL), published by the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP), is recognized as one of the world's leading academic supply chain journals. But sometimes it may be hard for practitioners to see how the research presented in its pages applies to what they do on a day-to-day basis. To help bridge that gap, CSCMP's Supply Chain Quarterly challenges the authors of selected JBL articles to explain the real-world applications of their academic work.
"Reconceptualizing Intuition in Supply Chain Management" by Craig R. Carter and Lutz Kaufmann of Arizona State University and Claudia M. Wagner of WHU—Otto Beisheim School of Management. This article received CSCMP's Bernard J. La Londe Best Paper Award for the most valuable paper published in the Journal of Business Logistics in 2018.
As managers, it can be tempting to believe that all of our decisions are fact-based and rational. But this is not always the case, especially when we have to operate in uncertain and time-constrained environments. For example, in pressured situations like negotiations with suppliers, supply chain managers might not have the luxury of putting the process on pause and running what-if analyses. In these circumstances, managers often make decisions based on a "hunch" or "gut feel."
Walk the floor of the Supply Chain Exhibition at the CSCMP Annual EDGE Conference and almost every vendor you encounter will pitch you the promise of putting your supply chain, “Into the Cloud.”
The promise is that the cloud will allow you to free up your IT departments to create innovative solutions and not hold back the enterprise due to the yoke of legacy infrastructure. While the promise of cloud solutions sounds good in theory, what does this really mean for most businesses?
To get a flavor of what this holds for the future, pay attention to the November 5 announcement by Walmart and Microsoft. They unveiled an expansion of a partnership to move thousands of Walmart business applications to the Microsoft Azure cloud and to develop a new generation of applications designed specifically for the cloud.
Sounds great in theory, but what does this mean in practice for companies that don’t have the combined market capitalization of Microsoft and Walmart?
For most companies, they can start with their analytics. There are several, easily implemented solutions that can have companies pushing supply chain data to the cloud to be displayed in a number of Business Intelligence applications.
After analytics, companies can look to move their TMS and WMS systems to the cloud. While the timeline to implement is longer, there are many mature solutions available that can live in the cloud. These solutions have quickly moved from providing only base functionality, to providing Tier I levels of WMS and TMS capabilities in a designed for cloud platform. Companies can also look to stand up legacy systems on cloud servers to reduce the IT overhead.
As companies mature into their cloud implementations, they can then look at the whole ecosystem of business applications across the enterprise. From the ERP to Retail, companies can start moving and developing a host of solutions in the cloud.
The promise of the Supply Chain in the cloud is real, and as we have seen from the market movers, it is time for all businesses to address the change and start to determine how they best move their supply chain into the cloud.
