Answering a “hirer” calling

While identifying and recruiting supply chain talent can be a headache for many companies, Charlie Saffro of CS Recruiting has made it her mission to help them find the right fit, one position at a time.
FINDING AND MAINTAINING adequate staffing is arguably the biggest challenge supply chains face today. Seeing a need for direct recruiting/retention services within the logistics, transportation, and supply chain markets, Charlie Saffro, president and founder of CS Recruiting, has made it her mission to help these companies tackle the complexities of hiring and retaining talent, one job at a time.
With a background in advertising, Saffro says she “fell” into both recruiting and the supply chain industry. “Yet looking back, there's no doubt that this was always my path,” she says.

Over the past 13-plus years, she has dedicated her time and energy to matching many different types of talent—individuals that do everything from sales to operations, customer support to planning, and everything in between—to the right companies. “Every job we take on is an opportunity to learn from our client and the candidates we meet,” explains Saffro.

During a recent CSCMP “Supply Chain in the Fast Lane” podcast interview, Supply Chain Quarterly Managing Editor Diane Rand spoke with Saffro to find out what she’s learned about hiring and retaining supply chain talent—specifically, what works and what’s a waste of time and money.

Vizion CEO Kyle Henderson writes about the leverage shippers, freight forwarders and others in the supply chain space now enjoy. Given falling rates and demand, shippers can now negotiate more demurrage time while also using direct connections to ports and terminals worldwide to monitor a container's transition from sea to land—and retrieve that container before demurrage charges begin.

Try new things and get outside of your comfort zone when asked to volunteer or participate. My most impactful connection is networking with a Professor of S&OP - My team and I have presented in his class 4x now and take away so much from the students and the experience."

CSCMP 2023 European Conference & Research Seminar
Achieving a Resilient Supply Chain in a Fast-Changing World is the theme for this year's European Conference & European Research Seminar, an international double-congress focused on Europe that gathers professionals and academics from the end-to-end supply chain around the globe. The interactive event focuses on discussions and debates on new research and innovations across the industry, with the aim of sharing contemporary issues as they relate to global supply-chain management.
The Annual Third-Party Logistics Study investigates leading trends into the ways in which shippers and 3PL's collaborate to drive value in the supply chain. The study also highlights trends and issues that will be impactful for the future state of logistics outsourcing.

The 2024 Third-Party Logistics Study survey is now live and we're seeking input from supply chain professionals. Please click here to take part. The publication is a collaboration between Penske Logistics, NTT Data Services, and supply chain professor Dr. John Langley.

This year’s study topics:
  • The balance of power and partnership (sourcing and selection)
  • The flow of data as supply chains become digital
  • Looking beyond the hype of technology
Your insights are welcome and please remember that your answers will be confidential. A complimentary copy will be available after it is released at the CSCMP EDGE 2023 Supply Chain Conference & Exhibition in October.
Take the Young Professionals Survey Now!

This biennial survey was created to help logistics companies learn about the motivations of young professionals entering the field. Now in its fourth year, Korn Ferry is again collaborating with CSCMP and Penske to help with the survey design, deployment, and analysis.

This survey will take approx. 5 minutes. Your participation is voluntary, and your responses will remain confidential and analyzed in aggregate form.

Effective communications are vital in every supply chain—that includes not just communications with external partners, but communications in our own workplaces as well.

That's why the Council for Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP), Faculty Director and Assistant Professor Linda Dunn at Georgetown University SCS Supply Chain Management Master's Program, and Logistics multi-media producer DC Velocity have joined forces to study this important topic. The key objectives of the research are to gather insights into supply chain workplace communication best practices, challenges, and preferences and to use those insights to help guide supply chain leaders and executives in ways to optimize communications in their workplace. As professionals managing various aspects of supply chains, your experiences and opinions are valuable.

Please complete this short (approx. 12-minute), anonymous survey focused on getting your perspective regarding communications in your workplace. We will share the survey highlights combined with additional communication insights in CSCMP communications later this year.

April Highlights:
For the second consecutive month the Logistics Managers’ Index has reached a new all-time low, reading in at 50.9 in April. While this is only slightly down (-0.2) from March’s reading of 51.1, it marks a new nadir in the 6.5-year history of the index. This new low is being driven by a dip in Inventory Levels, which are down (-4.7) to 50.9, suggesting that respondents continue to get closer to properly balancing their supply of goods and working through the glut many of them have been saddled with for the last year.

Economic Impact:
Despite the many pieces of positive economic news, the overall LMI index is down (-0.2) to 50.9 and its lowest reading in the history of the index. Like 2019, it seems that we simultaneously have a recession in the freight industry, but not in the overall economy. Consumer spending on things like services remains high, but bulky goods are not being shipped B2B and trucking capacity is sitting idle.

CSCMP Center for Advancement of Talent & Training (CATT)
In April 2022, CSCMP and the CSCMP Ukraine Roundtable established the CSCMP Talent Center (recently renamed CSCMP's Center for Advancement of Talent & Training or CATT) Ukraine Logistics Operations Relief Fund to support the collection and distribution of medical and food relief to the millions of people affected by the war in Ukraine. The CSCMP Ukraine Roundtable is made up of supply chain professionals who invest their volunteer time in promoting and delivering educational events. With the war in Ukraine, they turned to serving the needs of people by collaborating with pre-qualified logistics service providers delivering food, clothing, and medicine.

We stand with our CSCMP Roundtable community in Ukraine, our members, friends, and colleagues and support their right to live peacefully in a sovereign, free country without the threat of coercion. The CSCMP Ukraine Logistics Operations Relief Fund remains open for ongoing tax-deductible contributions to support the logistics relief operations in war-ravaged Ukraine.
