Supply Chain Monthly
Current News

The disruptions of the last two years have forced companies to take a fresh look at their supply chain strategies. Here’s how one chemical distributor used this tumultuous time as an opportunity to redefine its supply chain, adopting new technologies and best practices.

The past 24-plus months have been challenging across almost every industry and especially hard on supply chains. From the COVID-19 pandemic to raw material shortages, from port backups and rail disruptions to extreme weather and geopolitical events, from factory shutdowns to labor shortages—we have not seen a confluence of disruptive forces like this in over a quarter-century. The challenges posed in recent years have served as a litmus test for modern supply chains. They have also required supply chain professionals to be immensely adaptable and resilient.

The Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) and the MIT Center for Transportation & Logistics (MIT CTL) have partnered on the 4th Annual State of Supply Chain Sustainability survey to gain a better understanding of the state of sustainable supply chains, which will be presented in the annual report exploring how supply chain sustainability is prioritized and practiced around the world.

Please take a moment to participate in this important survey and share it with any professionals you know who might also be willing to participate. This anonymous survey is available in English, Chinese, Portuguese, and Spanish.

The objective is to survey professionals globally across industries, regions, and positions to get a fuller picture of the state of modern supply chain sustainability. The survey should take 10 minutes or less to complete.

"I joined CSCMP over 5 years ago when I first made the transition from working in medical device manufacturing to logistics. I knew it would be a whole new world with distinct challenges and opportunities and I wanted to equip myself with the knowledge and connections to be successful. What is most valuable to me is the ability to "phone a friend" whenever I'm encountering a problem or issue. I've used my CSCMP connections, both local and across the country, over the years for personal and professional challenges. I am happy to be able to do the same for others."

According to the Logistics Manager’s Index, February reads in at 54.7, down from January’s reading of 57.6, fairly consistent with December's reading. The comparison to December is pertinent here as there are anecdotal reports that January’s transportation market was slightly inflated due to delayed holiday shipments. The report goes on to share that this month’s transportation metrics suggest the excess capacity that pushed down prices through 2022 is still with us. One trend that does seem to be shifting—and pushing the overall index down—is the sudden shift from contraction to expansion in Warehousing Capacity. This looseness is likely welcome to many shippers as it may foreshadow a coming decrease in the costs of warehousing and overall inventories. Respondents expect this moderate rate of growth to continue over the next 12 months.

CSCMP Center for Advancement of Talent & Training (CATT)
In April 2022, CSCMP and the CSCMP Ukraine Roundtable established the CSCMP Talent Center (recently renamed CSCMP's Center for Advancement of Talent & Training or CATT) Ukraine Logistics Operations Relief Fund to support the collection and distribution of medical and food relief to the millions of people affected by the war in Ukraine. The CSCMP Ukraine Roundtable is made up of supply chain professionals who invest their volunteer time in promoting and delivering educational events. With the war in Ukraine, they turned to serving the needs of people by collaborating with pre-qualified logistics service providers delivering food, clothing, and medicine.

We stand with our CSCMP Roundtable community in Ukraine, our members, friends, and colleagues and support their right to live peacefully in a sovereign, free country without the threat of coercion. The CSCMP Ukraine Logistics Operations Relief Fund remains open for ongoing tax-deductible contributions to support the logistics relief operations in war-ravaged Ukraine. Contribute to the fund today.
