Case Management Society of America

Special Announcement
Are you ready to celebrate with CMSA? As you may know, the year 2020 marks 30 years of CMSA as an organization, as well as our Annual Conference & Expo. This year, we're bringing the annual conference experience right to your doorstep, June 28- July 2 – and it won't be your average virtual event!

We've been hard at work, gearing up for a virtual experience to deliver on what drives you to travel to our annual conference each year. This year's event features the opportunity to earn 40+ CEs inside of a single week, where you can interact live with your session speakers. You'll have a chance to visit with our fabulous exhibitors in 3D booths to learn about the latest case management products and technology. And, just as we do at our in-person conferences, you'll enjoy the opening night event – some time to relax and catch up with colleagues, new and old. If you were not planning to join us in Boston this year, you're in luck: travel restrictions and child care challenges are no longer an issue!

We are putting the finishing touches on the 2020 virtual conference; in the coming days you'll see communications with details on the event, including options to choose from for your individual and/or exhibitor needs.

Save the date and stay tuned for the big details!

Happy Belated Social Work Month!

I want to take this opportunity to apologize to all social workers for forgetting to congratulate you in March during Social Work Month. I have no excuse for not recognizing and thanking you for your incredible dedication and service at that time, other than the fact that I guess my mind was on the horrible coronavirus pandemic that was overwhelming us. I would now like to belatedly congratulate each of you on the outstanding work you do each day and for the close working relationship that has been established between the social workers and case managers. What a dynamic duo!

I also want to belatedly congratulate the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) on their 65th anniversary. NASW is the largest social work membership organization in the world, with more than 120,000 members. It has been working since 1955 to enhance the professional growth and development of its members, to create and maintain professional standards and to advance sound social policies. Congratulations, and we look forward to many more years of the NASW/CMSA partnership.

The impetus for the 2016 revision of the Standards is the need to emphasize the professional nature of the practice and role of the case manager. The 2016 Standards of Practice contain information about case management including an updated definition, practice settings, roles and responsibilities, case management process, philosophy and guiding principles, as well as the standards and how they are demonstrated.

This issue of CMSA Today explores how we can continually improve case management practice through ongoing education, critical thinking, reflective practice, and deployment of evidence-based practice. Collaborative practice is key to developing safe discharge plans to our most vulnerable patients. In addition, we have a critical role specific to political advocacy and building awareness in meeting the needs of the individuals we care for.
