CMSA's Standards of Practice for Case Management serve to drive best practice accountability for individual professional case managers as well as for organizations.

CMSA's new online course is designed to enhance understanding by expanding on these common principles to deliver a more unified education to professional case managers, creating quality skill sets across the healthcare continuum. The coursework embraces the case management care continuum in any work environment, which contributes to consistency in foundational case management knowledge and a sustainable workforce.

The course is made up of 16 online modules, each representing the sections of the CMSA Standards of Practice, including one on each of the 15 Standards. Each module contains a detailed narrative with enhanced explanations of that Standard including bibliographies, references, and a professional video presentation of that narrative content with downloadable slide handouts, which incorporate case scenarios showing real-life situations in order to better understand that Standard. This course is pre-approved for 32 hours of continuing education credit for RN, SW, and CCM.

CMSA’s Opioid Use Disorder Case Management Guide was developed in collaboration with Reinsurance Group of America’s ROSE program and authored by CMSA’s Executive Director, Kathleen Fraser, CMSA Program Director, Rebecca Perez, and Senior RGA ROSE Consultant, Melinda Baxter.

The abuse of opioids is a global problem that affects the health, social and economic welfare of societies.

The challenge of healthcare professionals is to confront the growing impact of opioid abuse on health and well-being while preserving the fundamental role of opioids for the treatment of pain and human suffering.

This guide assists case managers and other healthcare professionals in the assessment, care planning process, and intervention development to address opioid use disorder. This digital guide is one of the many benefits to CMSA members!

Happy Belated Nurses’ Week! Congratulations on choosing the best profession ever!

May 6-12 is celebrated as "National Nurses Week" each year to honor our profession and the vital roles we play in caring for and educating patients and their families, and to recognize our overall commitment to promoting and improving healthcare.

History of National Nurses Week

Let’s take a look at a brief history of how National Nurses Week evolved over the years.

1954 – The first nurse week celebration was observed October 11-16 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s mission in the Crimean War.

1955 – A bill was introduced in Congress for a nurse week, but no action was taken and Congress discontinued resolutions for national weeks of any kind.

Recently, I sat with a fifty-eight-year-old stroke patient at a skilled nursing facility (SNF). The patient had a history of alcohol abuse and smoked a pack of cigarettes a day. He had a wife, five sons and a granddaughter. The patient had significant deficits from the stroke, and the potential for his returning home was poor. Based on the patient’s medical picture, it appeared it would be relatively easy to write a care plan and create the goals to match the plan. When I asked the patient what he would like to accomplish, he replied, "Rest. I’m so tired, and I want to see my son and my granddaughter."

There are frequent references to "patient-centric care plans" in health policy, health care standards and case manager literature. Case managers promote patient- or client-centered plans as a necessary component for authentic case management practice (CMSA 2016).

The challenge for case managers is to step back and allow the patient and his designated caregiver to create their own care plan and define their subsequent goals. This may require a change in paradigm for the case manager who previously directed care and set the goals for the patient care plan. At the heart of a patient-centric plan is the relationship between the case manager and the patient. The case manager learns the patient’s priorities, and the patient learns to trust the case manager. The mutual respect within the relationship allows the patient to design a personal plan of care and to set goals for the plan. The patient’s plan and goals may not be directly related to curing disease or health promotion, but the astute case manager will align the patient’s goals with health-related goals.

Proposed rules would advance administrative burden reduction, Medicare modernization, and the Meaningful Measures Initiative

On April 27, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) proposed transformative changes to the payment systems for services furnished by a range of medical facilities. The agency’s proposed payment rules also set out to continue to modernize Medicare through innovation in skilled nursing facility payment to drive value, advance meaningful quality measure reporting, and reduce paperwork and administrative costs.

"We envision all elements of CMS’ healthcare delivery system working to reward value over volume and decisively focus on patients receiving quality care from their Medicare benefits," said Administrator Seema Verma. "For skilled nursing facilities, we are taking important steps through proposed payment improvements that will reduce administrative burden, and foster innovation to improve care and quality for patients. As people face rising healthcare costs in other clinical settings, we need to leverage advances in technology that help to modernize our programs in a way that benefits patients."

Our partner, PRIME Education, has created a pair of web apps for inflammatory bowel disease – the IBD CareNavigator (for healthcare professionals) and the IBD CarePath (for patients) – that will simplify the treatment and management of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

The recently launched IBD CareNavigator boasts several unique features that make it a must-use for nurses and case managers:

1. Developed with guidance from the CMSA, AMCP Foundation, patient advocates, and expert faculty, it is accredited for 1.0 CME/CE

2. Allows for self-directed navigation with the option to save, download, and print a personalized toolbox

3. Promotes disease management and shared decision-making in accordance with best practices (e.g., AGA Care Pathways)

Start exploring right now by visiting www.ibd.care and be sure to check out the accompanying IBD CarePath patient tool, which you can share widely at your clinic, practice, or healthcare setting.
