Last week’s unprecedented "Wanna Cry" ransomware attack affected over 200,000 systems in more than 150 countries, including China, France, India, Japan, Russia, Spain, Taiwan, the United Kingdom and the United States. European counties were hit the hardest: Germany’s railway system; Spain’s telecom, gas, and electrical companies; and the U.K.’s National Health System (NHS) trusts that were forced to shut down emergency services and cancel surgeries. Luckily, U.S. companies were largely spared because the threat was mitigated before they could be significantly affected.

While this was the most massive cybersecurity attack yet, we were spared from a larger catastrophe by a 22-year-old U.K. security researcher, who just happened to be checking his threat-sharing platform from home during a week off work, when he noticed several U.K. organizations being hit simultaneously with ransomware attacks. He and a fellow researcher were able to quickly find a way to significantly slow the malware’s progress, thus avoiding a major catastrophic cyber-event.

Engaging Your LTC Residents: Top Tips to Connect, Interview and Educate by Edward Leigh, MA

Create great experiences and you will have very satisfied residents; their family members will be very happy, too! As an added bonus, enthusiastic residents and their family members will become your organization’s biggest supporters, since they will tell everyone about their great experiences.

STRONG OPENING

The first few moments set the tone for the resident experience; what happens in the first minute makes or breaks the experience. The sequence of events for seeing a NEW resident (in chronological order) include:

-Use resident’s preferred name. In your first meeting, ask the resident how he or she would like to be addressed. Record the preferred name, and always use that name. Be cautious with nicknames; just because a resident wants to be addressed as "Barbara" does not necessarily mean she likes being called "Barb."

-Through interviews with thousands of LTC residents and patients, many report an intense dislike of being called "Honey" or "Sweetie." The resident told you the name he or she prefers; stick with that name. Also, if you feel your colleagues may have pronunciation issues with the name, note in the records how the name is pronounced.

Agency reinforces partnership with states in administering Medicaid Program

On May 9, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced a three-year extension for state Medicaid programs to meet the Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) settings requirements for settings operating before March 17, 2014. This extension is in response to states’ request for more time to demonstrate compliance with the regulatory requirements and ensure compliance activities are collaborative, transparent, and timely.

"Medicaid programs are strongest when states have time to engage with beneficiaries and their families to ensure these programs fit their choices and needs," said CMS Administrator Seema Verma. "Extending the HCBS compliance period by three years allows states to work more closely with those they serve, so they can increase the quality of care and minimize the potential for unnecessary disruption in services."
