CMF is excited to announce the 2016 Certification Scholarship recipients! Congratulations to Rose Marie Conos, Kharen Johnson, Yvette RuDenski, Jessica Souza, Laura Talbott, LaTasha Ursin and Alisha Wilson.

In fact, recipient Jessica Souza has earned her Case Manager Certification from the CCMC. She remarked, "The Case Management Foundation scholarship significantly helped me achieve my goal in becoming a certified nurse case manager as I was able to purchase and take practice exams. I am employed by a managed care organization, and my certification allows me to practice in full capacity as a nurse case manager for workers' compensation."

Each year, CMSA pays special tribute to those individuals who have demonstrated distinguished service to the case management profession.

A primary goal of the awards program is to inform members of the case management profession, other health professionals, government officials, and the public of the outstanding accomplishments and significant achievements of individual case managers in the delivery of healthcare. In addition, the awards program assists the public in gaining a better understanding of the role of case management and its significant contribution to the delivery of healthcare. Award recipients are recognized each year during the association's annual conference.

Download CMSA's Standards of Practice for Case Management, 2016 revision, which provides practice guidelines for the case management industry and its diverse stakeholders. The impetus for the 2016’s revision of the Standards is the need to emphasize the professional nature of the practice and role of the case manager.

The 2016 Standards of Practice contain information about case management including an updated definition, practice settings, roles and responsibilities, case management process, philosophy and guiding principles, as well as the standards and how they are demonstrated.

As the Greek philosopher, Heraclitus, once said, "Change is the only constant in life." Those of us who have been in healthcare for many years, and have seen a myriad of changes, can certainly agree that "change is a constant in healthcare."

Change has never been more prominent than in today’s healthcare. We’ve spent the past six years making significant changes in all sectors of healthcare to implement the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Yet now, the ACA may be repealed, meaning we would need to discard our accomplishments and start over from the beginning. This has a lot of people upset and could cost the industry immeasurable losses. Hopefully this won’t happen. It seems it would be better to keep the things that work (processes, policies, guidelines, technology, payment structures, quality initiatives, etc.) and use them as a foundation to build another system.

The Case Management Society of America is built on a rich history of leadership that has led it to be the largest and oldest non-profit, multi-disciplinary case management professional association in the United States. As we close out 2016, the Editorial Board thought it would be a good time to reconnect with the organizational leaders and share their thoughts on the important role that case managers play in today’s complex healthcare system. As you know, getting a hold of 23 people is not an easy task, so there are a few past presidents who were not able to participate. To preserve the chronological order, each past president is listed in the order of their presidency. Please take time to read this article. By doing so, you will be reenergized in your role. Thank you for all you do to enhance the value each of you bring to the practice of case management and to the broad healthcare system.

New challenge also announced to create tool to generate user-friendly "snapshot" of model privacy practices for digital health products

The Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) on December 13, in partnership with leaders in the private sector, as well as patient and consumer advocates, coordinated a live demonstration of consumer-friendly applications (apps) that import data from some of the largest health information technology (IT) vendors in the country to allow individuals to access a consolidated list of their medications from a variety of sources in one place. The demonstration illustrated the promise of Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR)—a set of private sector technical standards developed with the strong support of ONC—and took place at the annual Connected Health Conference hosted by the Personal Connected Health Alliance at National Harbor in Maryland.

Today, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released a tool to share automatically electronic data for the Medicare Quality Payment Program. This new release is the first in a series that will be part of CMS’s ongoing efforts to spur the creation of innovative, customizable tools to reduce burden for clinicians, while also supporting high-quality care for patients.

In October, CMS released the Quality Payment Program website, an interactive site to help clinicians understand the program and successfully participate. Today’s release, commonly referred to as an Application Program Interface (API), builds on that site by making it easier for other organizations to retrieve and maintain the Quality Payment Program’s measures and enable them to build applications for clinicians and their practices. The API, available at qpp.cms.gov/education, will allow developers to write software using the information described on the Explore Measures section of QPP.cms.gov. Based on interviews with clinicians, CMS created the Explores Measures tool, which enables clinicians and practice managers to select measures that likely fit their practice, assemble them into a group, and print or save them for reference. Already, tens of thousands of people are using this tool.
