Through its representation, advocacy and education functions, the Case Management Society of America (CMSA) has been an organizing force setting the practice direction for the discipline of case management. CMSA promotes practice that is evidence-based and discourages the use of practices which, though popular or widely accepted, are either not beneficial or are contrary to the CMSA Standards of Practice for Case Management (SoP). While the increasing emphasis on care coordination by providers and payers has opened professional debate regarding the models being used in hospitals today, CMSA intends to clarify its position on hospital case management practice through this white paper initiative and urges hospital leaders to seek solutions that more effectively address the needs of our most vulnerable hospitalized patients.

This white paper has been in the works for almost two years through the work of a CMSA task force. The accumulation of their work is ready to share!

This white paper is FREE to Members.
Non-Members may purchase for $25.00

Download CMSA's Standards of Practice for Case Management, 2016 revision, which provides practice guidelines for the case management industry and its diverse stakeholders. The impetus for the 2016 revision of the Standards is the need to emphasize the professional nature of the practice and role of the case manager.

The 2016 Standards contain information about case management including an updated definition, practice settings, roles and responsibilities, case management process, philosophy and guiding principles, as well as the standards and how they are demonstrated.

Everyone knows a normal temperature is 98.60 F, right? Well, that consistent standard that we all knew to be true is no longer correct. The recent results of a study conducted at Stanford University found that the average, normal temperature has been decreasing about 0.050 F every decade for the past 150 years. That means, instead of the normal temperature being 98.60 F, the new normal body temperature, compared to temperatures in the early 1900s, has dropped to 97.50 F for men (1.060 F less) and 98.0 F for women. This seems unreal. What has caused this? Could it be the more accurate thermometers that are being used today? Let’s start by looking at the development of the thermometer over the years.

CMS resets the federal-state relationship modernizing Medicaid to deliver better outcomes

On January 30, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced the Healthy Adult Opportunity (HAO), which is an optional demonstration initiative.  It is designed to give states unprecedented tools to design innovative health coverage programs tailored to the unique needs of adult beneficiaries, while holding states accountable for results and maintaining strong protections for our most at risk populations.

These innovations deliver on the Trump Administration’s promise to improve health outcomes and care for our most vulnerable. The Healthy Adult Opportunity puts patients first through state flexibility, accountability, and patient protections. It is designed to provide states with an opportunity to meet the needs of their  adult beneficiaries under age 65 who aren’t eligible on the basis of a disability or their need for long-term care and for whom Medicaid coverage is optional for states.  Other low-income adults, children, pregnant women, elderly adults, and people with disabilities will not be directly affected – except from the improvements that result from states reinvesting savings to improve and sustain Medicaid for everyone.
