History and Statistics of Data Breaches
There has been a lot of news lately about data breaches in political organizations, national security agencies, businesses, financial institutions, social networks and healthcare companies. With each breach, confidential data (personal, financial, medical, intellectual property or trade secrets) is stolen, viewed or used by unauthorized individuals. While this had been a problem when records were paper-based, the number of records stolen or exposed was smaller. Once the data became digitalized in the late 1980s and early 1990s, it became a much bigger issue, since large numbers of records could be compromised more easily.

In 2012, the Computer Science Corporation predicted that by 2020 data production would be 44 times what it was in 2009 (a 4,300% increase). They also predicted that one-third of all data would live in or be passed through the cloud. Well, it’s only 2019 and we may have already exceeded that prediction with the amount of data that is generated each date. 90% of the data was generated between 2013 and 2015 alone. That means that the other 10% was generated since the beginning of time. That is unbelievable! How is that possible? How will we ever be able to handle this exponential increase in the volume of data in the coming years?

I am excited to see everyone gather for the 29th Annual CMSA Conference in Las Vegas. It presents a great opportunity to learn, share ideas and connect with case management colleagues from throughout our global community. It is hard to believe that a year has passed since the last conference in Chicago.

Since then, I have had the opportunity to present on the Future of Case Management for CMSA Northwest Inland (WA), CMSA Chicago, CMSA Houston and CMSA Dallas-Forth Worth. Attending chapter events has given me the opportunity to learn from the membership about their needs as case management professionals. These discussions assist the CMSA Board in continuing our efforts to improve the value proposition of CMSA membership. I have represented CMSA at different events throughout the country and continue to take every opportunity to educate stakeholders on case management practice and the critical importance of the case management professional.

On May 2 at the Medical Device Manufacturers Association (MDMA) Annual Meeting, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Administrator Seema Verma for the first time walked through the agency’s comprehensive strategy to improve patients’ access to emerging technologies. The future directions outlined in today’s address build on recently released CMS policies to unleash innovation in our healthcare system, reinforcing the Trump Administration’s commitment to encouraging a competitive market that lowers cost and increases the quality of and access to healthcare for all Americans.

“Innovation is the fuel that powers the engine of progress and creativity. That is why the Trump Administration is taking action in every possible way to promote, enhance, and foster innovation within the healthcare system,” said CMS Administrator Seema Verma. “We are committed to removing government barriers and modernizing regulations around new technologies to ensure safe and effective treatments are readily accessible to beneficiaries without delaying patient care.”

Building on the success of ibd.care and myms.care, PRIME, in partnership with the Case Management Society of America (CMSA) and the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP), are pleased to announce the launch of lipid.care, a new online-tethered tool to facilitate shared decision making and help guide critical conversations between patients receiving care for high cholesterol and the clinicians delivering it. Accessed from the same landing page and requiring no download, patient-focused CarePath and provider-focused CareNavigator help align preferences and goals, ensuring that patients and their providers are on the same page to help improve the patient experience and outcomes. These online tools are also designed to help simplify the process of navigating increasingly complex health insurance requirements for both patients and providers by offering specific tips to avoid unnecessary delays in treatment. In addition, patients can print a customized “CareGuide” to take with them to their medical appointments. The CareGuide, which includes a list of the patient’s preferences, key concerns, and questions, serves as an important resource and reference tool when patients are deciding on a care plan with their providers.
