It’s the final day of the main conference, and we hope you’ve had the experience of a lifetime, reconnecting with old friends, meeting new ones, and gathering inspiration and ideas that you can take home with you and use in your practice of case management. And we’re not done yet!

Today begins with concurrent sessions at 8:45 a.m., including “Servant Leadership: Influencing Case Management Success.” That’s followed at 10 a.m. by the opening of the Expo Hall, which will feature poster presentations. Lunch symposia will begin at 12:45 p.m., followed by more concurrent sessions at 2:30, including “Case Managers—Put Your Oxygen Mask on First Before Helping Others.” And make sure to attend our today's keynote at 4 p.m., featuring Colette Carlson.

In Wednesday’s keynote, “Raising Cain: How to Increase Your Impact as a Leader,” Anton Gunn, MSW, CDM, CSP, talked about how improving leadership skills can help people make more of a difference and leave a lasting legacy in their lives.

He mentioned two important questions that leaders should ask themselves:

• How do I have a full-spectrum impact?

• How can I make it right?

Then he presented a framework for making it right, and for increasing one’s impact as a leader based on a phrase his grandmother used—Raising Cain:

• C is for communication. He explained the importance of effectively “communicating your why,” the motivation behind your actions.

• A is for attitude. He advocated developing a “make it right mindset” and committing to professional development.

• I is for influence. He said that sharing your values and demonstrating your commitment can increase how much influence you have.

• N is for network. He stressed the importance of building lasting connections and being relational rather than transactional with others.

He also spoke about legacy, saying that we should use our talents and abilities to leave something for those who come after us. “Don’t try to be successful; be significant,” he said.

In yesterday’s CMSA Presidents’ Panel, a distinguished group of case management experts, all of them former presidents of CMSA, fielded questions and shared their extensive knowledge and experience with a large group of attendees in Grand Ballroom F.

CMSA President Jose Alejandro recognized the past presidents who couldn’t attend. Then he and President Elect Melanie Prince introduced this year’s panelists:

An African Sunset � The Real Challenge of Managing Patients with HIV

In this early session on Wednesday, Carol Garner, RN, CCMSA, shared how taking a creative approach to encouraging test and treatment compliance can help in managing patients with HIV in South Africa.

She noted that, worldwide, 37 million people are living with HIV, and 69% of the world’s HIV population live in Africa. South Africa, with a total population of 60 million, has 7.2 million people with HIV, and there are 1,200 new infections per day.

Challenges to combatting HIV in South Africa include the social stigma around the disease; the widespread but incorrect assumption that insurers in the country will not pay for the care of HIV patients; the difficulties people in rural areas have in accessing care; low levels of literacy; and poor compliance.

One difficulty for hospital-based case managers in South Africa is that they’re not allowed to communicate HIV ICD coding to insurers. She noted, “’Normal’ medical admission LOS become extended to almost double with diseased patients not disclosed.” She added that hospital case managers often use a “secret language” to get the message across to the funder case manager rather than using the diagnosis code.

Effective approaches to improving the rate of HIV testing and compliance with treatment regimens have included incentive campaigns; employer-based outreach programs; engaging families for their support; and involving primary care, such as village nurses, especially in rural areas. She noted that what’s important is to be creative and take into account the cultural and social forces that may be standing in the way of testing and compliance.

So far, my favorite part of the conference has been the inspirational keynote speakers – Vernice Armour and Anton Gunn, inspiring the case management community and reminding us that the work we do is so important and valuable in the healthcare system. What I love the most each year that I attend CMSA’s annual conference is the ability to network with colleagues and friends who share the same passion for professional case management.

Yesterday’s Annual Membership Meeting

At CMSA’s Annual Membership Meeting yesterday morning, CMSA National President Jose Alejandro acknowledged the work of the 2018-2019 board of directors and welcomed the incoming board members for 2019-2020, including President-Elect Melanie Prince, MSN, RN, RN-BC, CCM.

He also recognized CMSA’s past presidents, who continue to play an important role within the association. In addition, he recognized all the volunteers who have contributed with their efforts, including national and chapter committee or task force members, as well as chapter presidents and past presidents, and chapter board members.

Afterward, he introduced a moving video in remembrance of the CMSA members who passed on since last year’s annual conference. He also recognized the military veterans and active-duty personnel in the audience, as well as international attendees and first-time attendees.

Susie Ratterree, chair of the Bylaws Committee, took the stage to share the committee’s recommendation that the bylaws be amended to include “Professional” in front of “Case Manager” to further define the role of case manager. The motion was passed.

Hussein Tahan, chair of the Membership Committee, then discussed a survey the committee has undertaken to ascertain what members find most valuable about their involvement both with the national organization and with their local chapters. When complete, the survey results will appear in CMSA Today magazine.

Afterward, Mary McLaughlin-Davis, chair of the Hospital Case Management Task Force, and Stefani Daniels, a member of the task force, spoke about their white paper on the practice of hospital case management. Printed copies of the white paper were made available at the end of the annual meeting, compliments of the Cleveland Clinic. CMSA members can also access it for free at the CMSA website.

Kathleen Fraser then gave a brief overview of the programs and educational resources available to members, including the Educational Resource Library, which contains a wealth of offerings, including session recordings from CMSA conferences as well as webinars. She also discussed the Standards of Professional Case Management Practice Program; the Case Management Opioid Guide, which will be updated soon; the Motivational Interviewing online course; the Integrated Case Management Program; the Care Coordination and Transitions of Care course; and Addressing the Social Determinants of Health: Ethical Considerations. She added that new and updated products are coming out all the time.

Dr. Alejandro then took the stage again to introduce CMSA Foundation president Deborah Gutteridge, who spoke about the Foundation’s work and introduced the Foundation board, including Melanie Prince, the new 2019-2020 vice president. Gutteridge also recognized the 2019 recipient of the ICM Training Scholarship, and the recipients of the new Margaret Leonard Public Policy Grant. She then brought Margaret Leonard to the stage, where Peggy received a standing ovation. Deborah Gutteridge recognized the chapters that have supported the Foundation during chapter events and donated special items for the Foundation’s benefit.

In Tuesday’s high-energy Opening Keynote, Vernice “FlyGirl” Armour spoke of her experiences as America’s first African American female combat pilot and provided direction and motivation for others as they face obstacles on their own road to excellence.

She said that while there will always be challenges and difficulties, it’s important to take a step back and remember why you started out on your chosen journey to begin with. She added, “Acknowledge the obstacles; just don’t give them power.”

She said it’s important to have a flight plan – a framework that allows one to “flex and adapt and accomplish the mission.” She stressed the importance of taking action, of making the “gutsy move”—which will be different for each person.

In a line she repeated during the talk, she said, “You HAVE permission to engage!” She added, if you don’t give yourself permission, who will?

Who Can Turn the World on with a Smile? � Case Managers

June 12, 2019 -- Learning Session Spotlight

In this packed session, “Who Can Turn the World on with a Smile? – Case Managers,” Margaret (Peggy) Leonard, MS, RN-BC, FNP, noted that more nations are becoming interested in learning about the U.S.’s nursing regulations and certification policies and procedures, a fact that is creating opportunities for case managers willing to think globally.

She mentioned the work being done internationally by the National Council of the State Board of Nursing (NCSBN) and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) with regard to credentialing and licensure and offered advice for those interested in exploring working internationally.

Initial steps, she said, should include the following:

• Learn as much about the country as possible.

• Evaluate your own capacity to expand

• Consider engaging an in-country resource as a partner

• Consider engaging a U.S. organization with international experience

Monday's Preconference Workshops & Events

June 11, 2019 -- Learning Session Spotlight

Monday's preconference sessions gave attendees a chance to take a deep dive into important topics such as how to hone the leadership skills that can help make you a case management leader; mentoring our successors; and how to write professionally, whether with regard to emails with colleagues or preparing an article for publication.

Monday also saw the return of Military/VA/DoD Day, a day-long event once again attended by a full house of participants who were able to learn, share and discuss with colleagues about the most current trends and issues affecting military, VA and Department of Defence case managers.

Late afternoon in the Montego room saw a large turnout for the First-Time Attendee & New Member Orientation Meeting, in which Crystal Amos and Nikki Jackson shared conference tips such as making use of the conference mobile app.

What has been the most impactful moment for you so far? I think the enthusiasm of all the case managers, and the fact that we have newer case managers. We’re so excited about that. And the fact that it’s all happening when healthcare is changing so dramatically that it’s hard to even keep up. And a lot of trends that we’re seeing coming down are being reinforced here.
