  • CMSA President Gavel Exchange from Outgoing to Incoming President

  • Political Outlook: A Comprehensive Picture of the 2010 Midterm Elections & What's Going on in Washington - Donna Brazile

Be part of the history of CMSA as outgoing President Teri Treiger, RN-C, MA, CCM, CCP presents President-Elect Mary Beth Newman, MSN, RN-BC, A-CCC, CMAC, CCP, MEP, CCM with the gavel and wishes her well in her 2011-2012 Presidential term.

Hear their thoughts about what it means to hold this important office in the Case Management Society of America.

Last, but never least, she is a native of New Orleans.

Aside from working for the full recovery of her beloved New Orleans, Ms. Brazile’s passion is encouraging young people to vote, to work within the system to strengthen it, and to run for public office.

A New Orleans native, Ms. Brazile began her political career at the age of nine when she worked to elect a City Council candidate who had promised to build a playground in her neighborhood; the candidate won, the swing sets were installed, and a lifelong passion for political progress was ignited. Four decades and innumerable state and local campaigns later, Ms. Brazile has worked on every presidential campaign from 1976 through 2000, when she served as campaign manager for former Vice President Al Gore, becoming the first African-American woman to manage a presidential campaign.

Author of the best-selling memoir "Cooking with Grease: Stirring the Pots in American Politics," Ms. Brazile is an adjunct professor at Georgetown University, a syndicated newspaper columnist for United Media, a columnist for "Ms. Magazine," and "O, the Oprah Magazine," an on-air contributor to CNN, and ABC, where she regularly appears on "This Week with Christiane Amanpour."

In August 2009, "O, The Oprah Magazine" chose Ms. Brazile as one of its 20 "remarkable visionaries" for the magazine’s first-ever O Power List. In addition, she was named among the 100 Most Powerful Women by the "Washingtonian" magazine, Top 50 Women in America by "Essence" magazine, and received the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s highest award for political achievement.

A former member of the board of directors of the Louisiana Recovery Authority, responsible for leading the state’s rebuilding process in the aftermath of two catastrophic hurricanes, Ms. Brazile is the proud recipient of honorary doctorate degrees from Louisiana State University and Xavier University of Louisiana, the only historically Black, Catholic institution of higher education in the United States.

Ms. Brazile is founder and managing director of Brazile & Associates LLC, a general consulting, grassroots advocacy, and training firm based in Washington, DC.

Established to pay special tribute to individuals and chapters who have demonstrated distinguished service to the case management profession, the CMSA national awards program culminates with a special presentation at CMSA's Annual Conference.

Read on to find out who received the CMOY, AOSE, CEIA, and other  2011 awards.

Margo MacRobert, RN, MS, CCM, NEA-BC

As director of 75 CMs with clients in 74 of the 77 counties of Oklahoma, she has developed evidence-based practice protocols for all high-volume patient diagnoses by employing such guidelines as those outlined CMSA’s Standards of Practice.

A prolific presenter, she has spoken at case management related conferences, summits, and meetings around the country, and the world, including Australia, Hong Kong, and Canada.

She has provided consulting services for places as far away as the King Fahad Medical City Hospital in Riyad, Saudi Arabia, and acted as medical/legal nurse expert to the United States Dept. of Justice, US Attorney’s Offices in OK and Colorado.

According to other colleagues, our CMOY exemplifies the "GOLD STANDARD" for case management leaders on both national and local levels. So, please join us in celebrating CMSA’s 2011 Case Manager of the Year award recipient - Margo MacRobert!

Carol A. Gleason, MM, RN, CRRN, CCM, LRC, BCPC

A graduate of St. Elizabeth’s Hospital School of Nursing and Cambridge College with a Masters in Management, Carol is an experienced case manager, who has enjoyed a nursing career practicing in multiple settings, including sub-acute, neurological/neuro-behavioral, worker’s compensation, and hospital rehabilitation. Her implementation of case management grand rounds has resulted in improved outcomes for patients in several of the facilities in which she has worked.

Recognized as a strong patient advocate, she is admired by coworkers for her ability to stay on top of even the smallest details about her patients and for her ability to remain abreast of changes in the healthcare industry, managed care, and Medicare/Medicaid regulations.

Currently, Carol works as a Float Care Coordinator at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, where she steps into various practice settings within the hospital environment -- such as medicine, surgery, thoracics, cardiology and oncology, and including the management of Blood and Bone Marrow Transplantation patients. Congratulations, Carol Gleason!

"The GPS for Quality Health Care"
October 9 - 15, 2011

This year's theme,"Case Management: The GPS for Quality HealthCare," reflects the ability of case managers to navigate and direct through the health care maze.

The 2011 CM Week theme also has a special significance. It was submitted by Brenda Kitchen, a member of CMSA’s Central Virginia Chapter, and selected as the winning entry in the 2011 CM Week Slogan Contest! And just as a compass or global positioning system (GPS) helps one locate a certain destination, Case Managers make navigating the often choppy waters of the health care continuum, easier, safer, and better!

Purchase handy National CM Week items like t-shirts, lapel pins, posters, and more at http://www.cmsa.org/cmweek  (watch for 2012 products to be posted soon) to help celebrate case managers and to shine the spotlight on this exciting and important industry.
