2010-11 CMSA President Address by Teri Treiger, RN-C, MA, CCM, CCP

Join current CMSA President as she reviews the accomplishments of CMSA over the past year. She’ll discuss CMSA’s continued forward strides in growth and recognition and how our strength is in being a symphony of skills and not a solo act!

She discovered that family caregivers are part of a "silent and neglected workforce," and that the impact of these situations extends to national health care and social policy.

Thus began her work to help family caregivers receive the recognition, training, support, assistance, and public policy attention they deserve. As co-founder of the National Family Caregivers Association (NFCA) in 1993, she has built the group into the nation’s premier organization in support of these unsung heroes.

She has served on numerous national advisory committees and boards related to family care giving and is a founding advisor of Consumers Advocating for Patient Safety and board member of the National Patient Safety Foundation. She also serves on the Board of Directors of URAC and the Advisory Task Force of the National Transitions of Care Coalition.

An author of several books and numerous articles about family caregivers, Suzanne is often quoted by the media and has testified before Congress multiple times. Policy makers and legislators regularly request her input to ensure that the family caregiver perspective is included in public policy initiatives. She was named a winner of The Purpose Prize® in 2006, a major initiative to invest in Americans 60 and older who are leaders of a new age of social innovation, and was the 2004 recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Eli Lilly Welcome Back initiative.

After graduating from the New York Institute of Technology with a BS degree in Behavioral Science, our speaker received a Registered Nurse diploma from Kings County Hospital Center School of Nursing. After founding her first medical case management firm, Options Unlimited, she began Mullahy & Associates in 2007, kicking off the next chapter of her professional career to promote "Best in Class Practices."

She is author of The Case Manager’s Handbook, the 1998 American Journal of Nursing book of the year. Now in its fourth edition, it is widely regarded as a definitive textbook for the industry. A respected health care writer with a multitude of published articles and book chapters, she was editor of The Case Manager magazine, as well as contributing editor and editorial board member for many health care and case management publications.

Mullahy has served as National President of CMSA, as well as Chair of and committee member for numerous entities of the Commission for Case Manager Certification and other professional groups. Awarded CMSA’s 1999 "Case Manager of the Year," award, recipient of the Professional Rehabilitation Association’s Rehabilitation Professional of the Year in 1997 and CMSA’s distinguished Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010.

Her current mission is to empower case managers and give them encouragement, education, and training. With a deep passion and compassion for patients, she believes case managers can play a much greater role as advocates for patients and ombudsman for our ailing healthcare system.
