Yesterday's Annual Membership Meeting
At CMSA’s
Annual Membership Meeting yesterday morning, National President Mary
McLaughlin-Davis acknowledged the work of the 2017-2018 CMSA Board of
Directors and welcomed the new 2018-2019 CMSA Board, including incoming
president Jose Alejandro.
She also recognized
all of CMSA’s past presidents, then took a moment to thank the volunteers who
have contributed to CMSA’s success, including national committee or taskforce
members; chapter presidents and past presidents; chapter board members; and
chapter committee or taskforce members. Afterward, she honored the CMSA members
who passed on since last year’s annual conference in a touching In Memoriam
video presentation.
She
recognized members of the military and the VA, as well as first-time attendees,
of whom there were many in the crowd. She encouraged the first-timers to reach
out and ask questions of their peers, seek out their chapter leaders and get
involved.
She noted
that this year’s charity is Sarah’s Circle, which helps women who are homeless
or at risk of homelessness. CMSA Chicago president Eric Bergman introduced a
video about the charity. Afterward, he said that having the national conference
in Chicago had energized the entire chapter, which achieved a number of
significant accomplishments this past year, including growing its membership by
30 percent since January.
Jose
Alejandro, CMSA’s incoming president, presented a number of revisions to the
bylaws proposed by the bylaws committee, then called for a vote on the
revisions from the members in attendance. The
changes were approved.
Kathy Fraser
then took the stage to discuss CMSA’s Integrated Case Management, as well as
the Integrated Case Management Training, which launched in 2018; the CMSA
Standards of Professional Case Management Practice online course; the CMSA Opioid Use Disorder Case Management Guide;
and comMIt: Comprehensive Motivational Interviewing Training for Health Care
Professionals, an 8-hour online course, discounted for CMSA members, that
centers on motivational interviewing. She also made note of CMSA’s
collaborations with the Commission for Case Manager Certification and the
American College of Physician Advisors.
Rebecca
Perez then spoke about the CMSA Foundation and introduced a video message from
Margaret "Peggy" Leonard. Leonard, who announced that she is turning over the reins
of the foundation to someone she said "could take us to the next level": new CMSA
Foundation president Deborah Gutteridge, MS, CBIST. Gutteridge took the stage to discuss the ongoing work of the foundation.
A special
drawing took place at the end of the meeting with four winners of American
Express Gift Cards.

Opening Keynote
After
a video showing clips from his work on The Doctors and as a guest on other
shows, Travis Stork, MD, addressed a full Arie Crown Theater. He asked the
attendees to think of what was most important in their lives and guessed
afterward that most had thought of their family or other loved ones. Then he
stressed that to be able to be there for those other people, it’s necessary to
focus on one’s own health. While he began as an emergency department physician,
he said his passion is preventing illness. In keeping with that, he shared five
lessons:
Lesson #1: Let
Food Be Your Medicine, Not Your Poison
Lesson #2: Sit
Less, Move More
Lesson #3: The
Mind and Body ARE Connected
Lesson #4:
Focus on the "Health" in Health Care
Lesson #5:
Make Health Your Hobby He
said that small positive changes can end up yielding big results over time and
stressed that attendees should focus on their own health, because "each
individual in this room makes a difference."

Megatrends in the Workforce
In a
standing-room-only concurrent session, Michelle Despres, PT, CEAS II, vice
president and national product leader at One Call Care Management, discussed
trends in the workforce such as aging, obesity and comorbidities, then examined
potential solutions in terms of the prevention and management of workplace
injuries.
Despres
noted that older workers often bring a tremendous work ethic and a lot of
knowledge to the workforce. But in terms of healthcare, several
issues are common with older workers, including falls. In addition, older
workers have a longer recovery time than young workers.
Obesity,
which is at epidemic proportions in the U.S., also can result in significant
healthcare costs, increasing rates of injury in the workplace, and more
absences from work. Comorbid conditions, which increase in frequency with age, are
often associated with obesity as well.
Despres
then laid out solutions for managing aging, overweight and otherwise less
healthy workers. She stressed the importance of strength training as a way to
reduce age-related muscle loss and reduce fall risk and discussed how physical therapists can help reduce the incidence
of worker injuries. Taking ergonomics into account also can be an important step, she said.

Deborah Gutteridge, MS, CBIST
President of the CMSA Foundation
Q. What is
it like taking over as president of the CMSA Foundation from outgoing president
Margaret "Peggy" Leonard?
A: "I’ve
been helping Peggy with the foundation since it started. Hers will be extremely
hard shoes to fill, because I’ve never met someone with the level of passion
and dedication she has. When she called and asked me to take over, it was
something I couldn’t say no to. I have some of the dedicated crazy she has, and
like her, I believe in case managers supporting case managers. Peggy is
donating $5,000 a year for the next five years for a scholarship for the
development of public policy, and a special edition lapel pen honoring her is
available at the CMSA Foundation booth for $25."
Note: The
CMSA Foundation is holding a raffle at its booth (#429), with the grand prize
of a trip to Las Vegas that includes the following:
- $1,000 airfare
voucher
- 2-night stay at
The Mirage
- Dinner at Tom
Colicchio’s Heritage Steak
- 2 tickets to
Cirque du Soleil Love
- Complimentary registration to the CMSA 29th Annual Conference & Expo.
The drawing will be held
Saturday at noon.
