Wednesday’s Keynote with Jonathan Gottschall: The Storytelling Animal—How Stories Make Us Human
Gottschall’s research, at the intersection of science and art, has frequently been covered by major media outlets, and he took the stage Wednesday to share about the art of storytelling.

He began noting the history of art and how in historical literature it’s referenced as an 'infection,' meaning that the whole point is for it to 'infect' with emotion and thoughts. "That’s the whole point," Gottschall said. "Stories do indeed infect us... they shape our values, attitudes, and behaviors — they actually change our brain chemistry."

He spoke to attendees about historical and scientific evidence behind storytelling and how telling stories is an innate and special power that all of us possess as human beings. "Unless you tap into the special power that a story has to rivet our attention and arouse us emotionally, it’s hard to change our hearts and change our minds," he said.

In sharing the ‘magic formula’ for storytelling, he compared it to a simple equation: character + predicament (problem, trouble, challenge) + attempted solution = great storytelling.

The power of storytelling as it relates to case management allows us to make more impactful and meaningful connections with patients and our constituents. The next time you need to get the point across in a meeting or when consulting with a client, remember the power of storytelling and how it affects those listening.

The Industry and Workforce are Transforming — Is Your Hiring Strategy?
Sponsor: Medix

Ken Williams, national director, Care Management with Medix, spoke to attendees about hiring for the next generation of case managers. In thinking about and strategizing your hiring strategy, he noted that there are two important questions to ask:
  1. How are we setting up the future?
  2. How are we passing on our knowledge?
Although alarming, Williams noted that 21% of applicants lie about their degrees on their resume and that 33% provide inaccurate descriptions of what they have done and are comfortable with.  "The resume is not the best judgement of what you're looking at," he said.

In looking ahead, he noted that by 2025, 51-75% of case managers will have less than 10 years of experience. So what’s the anticipated problem? Companies don't want to hire inexperienced individuals and have no time to train.

Millennials are the future, and by 2030, 75% of the workforce will consist of them. "You want to build out what you're looking for in a person, not a job," Williams said. And we have to understand the talent in order to recruit and train them. "Millennials like collaboration, coaching, motivation, and metrics," he said.

Attendee to Attendee
Tracy and Dawn
Greater Grand Rapids/Kalamazoo Chapter of the Case Management Society of America

What has been the most impactful moment for you thus far?
Dawn: The most impactful moment was listening to the gentleman yesterday during the Dear World presentation when he was talking about being a "ditch-digger," how his wife went into early labor, and how he had to rely on Medicaid. I think there’s a lot of stigma for people who have to rely on the social safety nets, and it just goes to show that not everyone becomes a lifetime user of those resources.

Tracy: I’ve been impacted by meeting the attendees from other chapters and learning how they’re managing financial risk.

Congratulations on winning the Chapter Award of Excellence for Best Use of Technology yesterday. What would you share with other chapters about improving their website?
Tracy: We’ve invested quite a lot in website allocation and upgrading it to make it more current and user-friendly. Our educational events are all right there [on the site], and we added PayPal, so everything is now virtual and via snail mail. It’s been a great investment, and we’re actually budgeting so we can make the site responsive so it can be easily accessed on any device. We’re definitely raising the bar!

Dawn: We’ve also been really pushing the use of social media to get the message out, so that’s helped drive traffic to our site as well.
