Extreme price increases continued in July for a wide range of goods and services used in construction, according to an analysis by AGC of America of government data released recently. Association officials urged President Biden to immediately end tariffs and quotas on steel, aluminum, lumber and other essential construction items to help stave off inflationary pressure in the construction industry.

OSHA and NIOSH have teamed up to revise a safety and health handbook for small businesses.
The handbook outlines the benefits of an effective safety and health program. Included are self-inspection checklists to identify workplace hazards for general industry establishments.
 
On July 27, 2021, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) revised its COVID-19 guidance, recommending that even individuals who have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 should resume wearing masks in public indoor settings in those areas of the United States that have substantial or high COVID-19 transmission rates.

Cyberattacks are serious threats to the construction industry. In the last three years, cloud-based email breaches cost U.S. businesses more than $2 billion.
 
The U.S. Small Business Administration is opening a streamlined application portal that will allow businesses with Paycheck Protection Program loans of $150,000 or less to apply for forgiveness directly, according to a press release. The portal will begin accepting applications on Aug. 4, and be able to service about 6.5 million borrowers.
 
The construction industry added 11,000 jobs between June and July but nonresidential construction employment remains far below pre-pandemic levels, according to an analysis by AGC of America of government data released recently. Association officials said nonresidential construction has been affected by declining demand for projects, particularly for public infrastructure work, and urged Congress to quickly pass the new bipartisan infrastructure measure.
