Most contractors expect demand for many types of construction to shrink in 2021 even as the pandemic is prompting many owners to delay or cancel already-planned projects, meaning few firms will hire new workers, according to survey results released recently by the Associated General Contractors of America and Sage Construction and Real Estate. The findings are detailed in The Pandemic’s Growing Impacts on the Construction Industry: The 2021 Construction Hiring and Business Outlook Report.

The term “construction” appears 636 times in the $908 billion pandemic relief package and $1.4 trillion omnibus spending bill passed by Congress and signed by President Donald Trump at the end of December.

According to an agency press release, the time frame to submit the data has begun. Electronic submission of Form 300A, a yearly summary of injury and illnesses data, is required for establishments with 250 or more employees and those with 20 to 249 employees in certain high-hazard industries.

Only 34 percent of the nation’s metro areas—just over one-third—added construction jobs from November 2019 to November 2020, according to an analysis of new government data that the Associated General Contractors of America released recently. Association officials said large numbers of contractors are having to lay off workers once they complete projects begun before the pandemic because private owners and public agencies are hesitant to commit to new construction.

As the number of apps that workers use on the job increases, smartphones remain the most utilized mobile device on construction sites. A continuing problem, however, is a lack of integration and data sharing between those apps, according to a new study.

2020 brought scores of jobsite shutdowns, project delays and payment disputes to the construction industry. Everyone is ready for COVID-19 to be over, so the world—and construction projects—can get “back to normal.” But for many contractors, “normal” was never very good when it came to cash flow, making informed credit decisions and collecting payment.

COVID-19 has led construction companies to adopt new digital check-in apps that keep employees safe and jobsites symptom-free from the virus. Employers are discovering additional benefits with the use of these apps – benefits that may protect them from potential lawsuits.

CISCA is pleased to offer this free informational webinar with our colleagues at the Gypsum Association. This 40-minute session, presented by Gypsum Association’s Technical and Market Advisor Greg Woolley, will provide an in-depth look at the GA’s code-referenced Fire Resistance and Sound Control Design Manual (GA-600-2018). A brief overview of the Manual will be followed by a deeper dive into the General Explanatory Notes for fire and sound. Often overlooked, the Notes are very helpful in problem solving and code compliance issues. After drawing attention to additional GA resources, the instructor will take questions. Registration is free to CISCA members.

CISCA is offering a new way for you to get in front of your customers with our virtual Contractor Lunch & Learn series!

By participating, CISCA staff will host a one-hour Zoom session where you will present your products/services and take questions in an open forum. CISCA will invite our contractor members to the event but you can also invite products reps, independent reps and your non-CISCA member contractor customers to join. Best of all, this opportunity is FREE to you as a CISCA member! Your only cost is to provide a lunch voucher from a food delivery service (UberEats, GrubHub, DoorDash) for each contractor registered for your presentation.

Contractors will enjoy lunch at their desk while engaging with you during a virtual presentation… just like they would have done at your in-person presentation!

Ensuring that you have the right product for the application is key and there are four things to consider in your design process.
