Thirty-nine states lost construction jobs between August 2019 and August 2020 while 31 states and the District of Columbia added construction jobs between July and August according to a new analysis of Labor Department data released recently by the Associated General Contractors of America. The new annual figures detail how the coronavirus pandemic has undermined demand for construction projects after a strong start to the year.

The U.S. Department of Labor announced a proposed rule clarifying the definition of employee under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) as it relates to independent contractors. The national trade association, AGC of America, has long called for federal clarification of the independent contractor status and preservation of legitimate independent contractor relationships, such as those that have historically existed in the construction industry.
 
While many Americans have embraced a slower pace of life brought on by COVID-19, work has forged ahead with some businesses observing peak-level demand for essential industries like construction. But construction sites have not been immune to the feelings of uncertainty plaguing the nation and globe, requiring contractors to rapidly innovate traditional ways of planning and working to keep teammates and trade partners safe.

The AIA released new data recently showing that the Architecture Billings Index (ABI) remained at 40 in August, unchanged from June and July. (A score below 50 indicates decreasing billings). New design inquiries fared slightly better for the first time since February, increasing from 49.1 to 51.6, and the value of new design contracts moved from 41.7 to 46.
 
Don Galloway wants to clarify a couple of popular beliefs about wildfires. “Usually when folks think wildfire, they think Western U.S. and large, remote areas,” the chief operating officer for the Texas A&M Forest Service said. “It’s a rural problem. It’s an urban problem. It’s something everyone should have an awareness of.”
 
Like many businesses, the COVID-19 pandemic has exacted a heavy toll on the construction industry, upending many commercial projects that have caused financial hardship for scores of companies, their employees and subcontractors this year.
