Congratulations to Dave Chaffee of E&K Companies who was presented with the President’s Award by CISCA President Kelly Johnson during a zoom call of the CISCA Board of Directors June 10.  This award was scheduled to be presented during the convention in Las Vegas.

Dave has served on the CISCA board since 2015 and as Secretary-Treasurer since 2017.

“Dave is the recipient of this award for his outstanding service and continued contributions to CISCA. Even with his Board term set to expire in June of 2019, Dave graciously agreed to stay on and continue to serve as Secretary/Treasurer for an additional year. This ensured the continuity required to accomplish the vision and goals established for the coming year. As an integral part of implementing and Chairing our newly formed Finance Committee, Dave’s ability to ask thought provoking financial questions helped us thru this difficult year and we are a better organization because of it. In addition, Dave served as a driving force on our COP committee to outline a clear and concise road map for all to follow. While I could continue with many more examples of Dave’s contributions, I’ll pause to say it is with great admiration that I present this year’s CISCA President’s Award to my friend Dave Chaffee.”

Congratulations, Dave.

Now that moratoriums on nonessential construction have been lifted across the country, contractors are getting back to work with new protocols and provisions in place. From tool sanitization, hand-washing stations, staggered work schedules and mandatory face coverings, an emphasis on clean and healthy jobsites is driving a new way of building.

Borrowers only have to use 60% of their loan funds for payroll costs under changes the federal government made to the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) that President Trump signed into law recently. Previously, the program required borrowers to use 75% of the funds on payroll, a requirement contractors and other businesses said was too restrictive. For many companies impacted by mandatory stay-at-home orders, the money would have been better spent on rent and other operating costs, they argued.

Assessing a candidate is a complicated process that can’t be accomplished just by reading a resume or asking a candidate what they see as their greatest weakness. To find out whether someone is a good fit for the job opening and the company as a whole, managers have to fully understand their skills, motivation, personality, goals, strengths and weaknesses—but that’s not all. Leaders in the construction industry also have to think deeply about their own company’s culture, strengths, and weaknesses to find out how a candidate will fit in and where they can fill in the gaps on the team.
