As news of the coronavirus impact continues to unfold, this page will serve as a way to track projects or cities that have halted construction due to the pandemic.
More than a quarter of construction firms responding to an online survey conducted by the Associated General Contractors of America recently reported they had furloughed or terminated jobsite workers because of the coronavirus pandemic. The finding contrasts starkly with the association’s analysis of government data released recently that showed a majority of the nation’s metro areas added construction jobs through February.

It should come as no surprise that the COVID-19 global pandemic hasn’t impacted all industries equally. Some businesses, including department stores, traditional restaurants and childcare centers, have suffered devastating losses as a result of stay-at-home orders and social distancing protocols; others, such as food delivery businesses, digital advertising agencies and subscription services, are experiencing unprecedented surges in sales.
One would be hard-pressed to find any construction industry player that hasn't been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. While a few U.S. jurisdictions have banned construction work altogether, many more have limited which projects can move forward.
In response to a nationwide shortage of N95 filtering facepiece respirators during the COVID-19 pandemic, OSHA has announced further temporary easing of regulations related to respiratory protection.

The COVID-19 pandemic has prompted OSHA to postpone the seventh annual National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction. The event – initially slated for May 4-8 – is expected to be rescheduled for this summer, the agency states in a March 27 press release.
To survive and thrive beyond COVID-19, contractors must find better ways today to collect and share field data and deploy agile cloud-based resource management solutions that allow contractors to rapidly respond to any project issues with real-time data.
On March 27, President Trump signed the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act into law, providing approximately $2 trillion in aid to individuals and businesses throughout the country and authorizing $349 billion in forgivable loans from the Small Business Administration.
As state and local governments throughout the country struggle to define which construction is “essential” and which construction is “non-essential,” one topic of conversation has been overlooked: what liability exposure does a contractor have to its workers if it continues with work that is later deemed non-essential? While certain liabilities may be covered by the workers' compensation laws of various states, other liabilities may not.
