On behalf of the AWCI Board of Directors and CISCA Board of Directors, the decision has been made to cancel AWCI’s Convention & INTEX Expo 20 and CISCA’s Convention & INTEX Expo 20 scheduled for March 23-26 in Las Vegas due to concerns related to coronavirus (COVID-19). This was not an easy decision for our respective organizations. However, it is our obligation to do what is in the best interests of all attendees and our staff. 
 
This should be another good year for contractors, with Wells Fargo reporting they are optimistic about nonresidential construction activity in 2020. A majority of contractors surveyed are also planning to buy the same amount or more equipment this year over 2019.
 
Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) and Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) have introduced legislation that would allow workers to accrue up to 56 hours of paid sick leave while requiring employers to immediately provide 112 additional hours during public health emergencies, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
 
Despite the benefits, construction in mixed-use buildings can pose a number of challenges for workers and the public. Follow these best practices to keep safety top of mind and meeting compliance measures.

As a best practice in drafting contracts, make sure specific terms such as pandemic and disease are enumerated as a force majeure event or excused delays. For contractors currently negotiating an agreement, specifically naming COVID-19 with the force majeure language would be ideal. 
 
Some organizations are making use of VR as a safety training tool, bringing trainees closer to real-world experiences without exposing them to real-world dangers. But there are some drawbacks too.
 
Revenue recognition has always represented a challenge for the construction sector. In May 2014, the FASB in partnership with the International Accounting Standards Board released a much-anticipated update to GAAP standards for this complex area. Accounting Standards Update (ASU) 2014-09, Revenue from Contracts with Customers (Topic 606), as the guidance is titled, makes sweeping changes to revenue recognition in accounting and related reporting. As a result, contractors can expect their revenue recognition to vary dramatically in amount and timing from current patterns.
