In this competitive market, momentum during the hiring process is more important than ever. Getting solid candidates to consider making a move to a new company, especially if they’re contentedly employed, requires a lot of prep work and relationship-building. Once they’re interested enough to commit to an interview, they spend a lot of time getting prepared by researching the potential company and hiring managers and familiarizing themselves with that company’s website. 
 
OSHA is seeking industry input on its respirable crystalline silica standard for construction, and is taking comments until Oct. 15. Specifically, OSHA would like information on the effectiveness of work practice and engineering controls that limit worker exposure to respirable silica, as well as tasks and equipment related to silica exposure that are not currently included in Table 1 of the standard.
 
Upon announcement of further tariffs by both China and the U.S., several organizations have spoken out about the issues this is continuing to cause for the U.S. economy. Tariffs Hurt the Hartland - a national campaign supported by over 150 of America’s largest trade organizations representing retail, tech, manufacturing and agriculture - released a statement after President Trump’s announcement of further increasing tariffs on Chinese goods.

While it’s probably safe to say that most construction managers have either been involved with a project that used lean construction or at least have heard of lean principles, championed by the Lean Construction Institute, the same can’t be said for target-value design (TV-Design) and target-value delivery (TV-Delivery), even though both have been around for several years and fall under the lean umbrella.
 
Technology in the construction industry is changing. As younger generations enter the industry, they are embracing technology as project owners increasingly requiring the use of technologies on their projects. There are more tech solutions specifically designed for construction. Connectivity and computing power have increased dramatically, making mobile applications more reliable, robust and user-friendly.
 
U.S. expenditures on commercial building construction are forecast to advance 4.3% annually in nominal terms through 2023, according to Commercial Building Construction: United States, a report recently released by Freedonia Focus Reports. The report forecasts to 2023 expected US commercial building construction expenditures in nominal and real (inflation-adjusted) US dollars and floor space in square feet.
 
Each year, state and local governments spend more than $250 billion on the construction of roads, schools and other public infrastructure. Construction companies sometimes see government contracting as prohibitively competitive and believe the pay is low and the bid requirements are too time- and effort-consuming.
 
Design-build has become a widely-used construction project-delivery method due to the ability to complete projects quickly and efficiently while also reducing costs. However, along with these advantages are the increased risks that can confront both contractors and design professionals throughout project lifecycles.
 
Labor Day is today! That means a holiday that most of us get off work and usually spend it barbecuing with family and friends, maybe sitting around doing nothing or even out shopping taking advantage of sales. The Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) released its June 2019Contractor Confidence Index (CCI) report last week and found that the level of confidence among the nonresidential contractors it surveyed has slipped slightly from May to June, but most construction companies polled still remain optimistic about the future.
 
According to USG and U.S. Chamber of Commerce commercial construction index Q2 2019, contractors in the U.S. commercial construction industry remain optimistic about the market. This comes despite ongoing challenges with skilled workforce availability, supply chain pressure and tariff-related concerns. Despite the optimistic outlook, there is still the very real possibility of a slowdown in commercial construction in the next 18 to 24 months.
 
In July, estimated not seasonally adjusted construction unemployment rates rose nationally and in 38 states, fell in eight states and remained unchanged in four on a year-over-year basis, according to an Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) analysis of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data. For the third consecutive month, all 50 states posted construction unemployment rates less than 10%.
