Three of the biggest challenges that architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) firms face have to do with the difficulty of real-time collaboration, the complexity of joint venture partnerships and the availability of talent. Cloud virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), a turnkey service that delivers virtual desktops and workstations from a public cloud, can uniquely address all three of these challenges and serve as a primary change agent that drives AEC firm growth.

During CEMEX Ventures' annual Construction Startup Competition 2019, 10 startups that offered solutions focused on construction technology stood out their innovative and technological merit. This global challenge, which doubled its participation compared to the 2018 competition, seeks new business models that work in six priority opportunity areas defined by CEMEX, including: smart cities and buildings, project design and engineering, supply chain management, project and jobsite management, innovative building materials and construction methods and investment and financing.

Engineering and construction (E&C) companies have faced challenging times over the past several years. In addition, these financial tribulations sparked a wave of M&A activity. Such significant changes require a strong CEO to guide the company through changing times.

It may seem callous to look at worker safety from the standpoint of profit vs. cost. But let’s face it: There are those who don’t see the value in making the necessary investment in jobsite safety. Too many firms grow for the sake of growth, only to suffer when the end product does not meet the client’s expectations. Managing growth with a balanced view of a firm’s own talent and core service structure helps a best-in-class contractor avoid professional liability claims. Historically, firms that do not focus on talent acquisition and management do not fare well through market cycles.

The U.S. homebuilding industry’s stable outlook will persist with the industry resetting at a new normal, according to a new report by Moody’s Investors Service. This outlook comes despite six months of declining private residential spending for the first half of the year. It typically takes a few years to get a major capital project underway - and a handful more to physically create it. Once complete, however, the results stand for decades. When it comes to sustainability in construction, emerging technology is playing a larger role than ever before. Sensors, drones, artificial intelligence, machine learning and virtual reality can help enable environmentally responsible processes while reducing costs and improving data reliability.
