What if a contractor has trained its employees on safety rules and a few workers simply refuse to follow procedures? Is the employer still responsible? As it turns out, this could be considered employee misconduct, which can be used as defense against an OSHA violation.
 
This will be no ordinary interest rate cut, writes the New York Times’ Neil Irwin. The Federal Reserve is planning to cut rates at its policy meeting at the end of the month even though the United States economy, by most available evidence, is doing perfectly fine.

The concept of insurance is unique. A contractor can pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for a product it hopes to never use. If the contractor does use it, it is likely the cost will go up, and if the contractor uses it a lot, the insurance may not be available in the future. An often-overlooked fact about insurance is that the premiums and deductibles comprise only a portion of the total cost of risk (TCOR).
 
Today’s workforce is different. The society they live in is different. With low unemployment and worker shortages in many occupations, today’s workforce has a lot of leverage in the job market. And in most cases, it takes more than good pay to get employees to stick around.

Succession planning can be one of the most dangerous blind spots for leaders in the construction sector. It’s a challenge for any business, but construction firms are among the most vulnerable to poor planning in this area. Construction is relatively risky, and potential buyers are unwilling to take additional chances on companies that lack key skill sets.
 
Rep. Judy Chu, Democratic congresswoman from California, introduced a bill that, if passed, would direct OSHA to create a standard for heat-related injuries and illnesses. Chu's bill, H.R. 3668, was introduced July 10 and has been referred to the House Committee on Education and Labor.
 
The construction industry added 21,000 net new jobs in June, according to an Associated Builders and Contractors analysis of data released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. On a year-over-year basis, employment in the industry has expanded by 224,000 jobs, representing an increase of 3.1%. Nonresidential construction employment gained 14,900 net jobs in June and is up 146,700 jobs during the last 12 months.
