In 2018, unemployment was a mere 4.1 percent, a number unseen since 2000, and average hourly earnings exceeded the $30 mark for the first time, $3 higher than the national average. But despite the high ratings, two in 10 employees are planning to change their jobs in the next two years. When asked about the imminent departure, respondents cited better opportunities, lacking benefits, feeling underpaid and feeling undervalued as their top reasons. 
 
The U.S. Director of National Intelligence’s Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA) office has issued a draft grant offer for the development of a system that can detect construction activity worldwide. The announcement is part of the agency's Space-based Machine Automated Recognition Technique (SMART) program.

Lower mortgage rates have had only limited success at reviving homebuilding so far in 2019. Housing starts fell for the second consecutive month and have fallen in six of the past seven months. Permits show a similar, somewhat distressing trend, falling 1.7 percent in March, following declines of 2 percent and 0.7 percent in February and January, respectively.
 
The top motivator for adopting IoT technology is the possibility of lowering insurance premiums (67 percent), followed by recovering lost time due to incidents and winning more work because of a strong safety record, according to a new study from Dodge Data & Analytics in partnership with Triax Technologies. Nearly three-quarters of respondents believe IoT will help them control occupational risks, and about half expect it to reduce risks to the public, as well as financial risks and those related to property damage and construction defects.
 
Project labor agreements (PLAs) are a frequent point of contention in the construction industry, particularly when private contractors are forced to sign these typically union-negotiated deals. The pushback is strong enough that stakeholders are doing what they can to get government-mandated PLAs banned at both the state and federal level.

Higher education offers many opportunities, now and in the future, for construction companies and just about any related vendor and supplier. For starters, the construction boom that began around 2000 is expected to continue, but perhaps the most significant opportunity stems from the previous construction boom from 1950 to 1975. Campus facilities built during that period are now overdue for renovations and upgrades.

Digital 3D scans taken by an art history professor in 2015 may prove critical in efforts to rebuild the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France, which lost its spire and much of its roof to a fire last week. The 850-year-old landmark was undergoing renovations when the fire broke out, and police investigators have suggested an electrical short-circuit is to blame.
