The U.S. government appropriated $120 billion for federal construction spending in 2017, covering a range of projects from the construction of a new Federal Bureau of Investigation headquarters to building agricultural research facilities, according to the Associated General Contractors of America. President Donald Trump's 2018 budget proposal, even with its cuts to key federal spending programs and new funds for a U.S.–Mexico border wall, calls for roughly the same level of investment.

Public Library, in partnership with the DC Public Library Foundation, is asking for artists to submit proposals for a brand new painting on the ceiling of the Grand Reading Room, which is located on the third floor on the eastern side of the building by 9th Street NW.

New applications for unemployment insurance benefits rose 3,000 to 244,000 in the first week of August, the Department of Labor reported Thursday. Forecasters had expected jobless claims not to rise much above the previous week's very low level of 240,000. Low jobless claims are an encouraging sign for the economy.
