The industry numbers are being announced during this week’s NACS State of the Industry Summit. U.S. convenience stores experienced a 15th straight year of record in-store sales and a 4th straight year of $10 billion-plus in pretax profits, according to newly released State of the Industry data from NACS. The industry’s numbers were announced during the NACS State of the Industry Summit, which takes place April 10-12 at the O’Hare Hyatt Regency in Chicago. More than 600 leading retail and supplier company representatives are at the industry’s top conference for benchmarking and analysis of retail trends.

A renewable diesel and jet fuel refinery in Paramount has been sold to Boston-based biofuel producer World Energy as part of a deal reportedly worth $72 million.

The Paramount refinery was the core asset of renewable jet and diesel producer AltAir Paramount LLC, which also owned an adjacent tank farm. AltAir had been owned by Delek U.S. Holdings of Brentwood, Tenn.

BP last week reminded branded wholesalers that it can de-brand stations that are caught selling tobacco to minors or selling illegal drugs, including synthetic marijuana and bath salts.

As previously reported, the sale of synthetic drugs at convenience stores and gas stations have given the industry a black eye and federal statistics have shown a disproportionate share of illegal tobacco sales to minors occur at retail fuel sites -- including branded gas stations.

A preliminary decision by Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Elihu M. Berle — that coffee should carry a warning that it is potentially carcinogenic because it has trace amounts of acrylamide — should be maddening to those who care about public health. That’s not just because it’s a decision that runs counter to the bulk of known scientific evidence or could lead to fines of hundreds of millions of dollars against reputable companies appropriately concerned about customer health. It’s because it seems that under Proposition 65, a 1986 ballot measure dubbed the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act, the judge had no choice.

California’s rampant wildfires have ignited legal questions as the state begins to deal with the question of who’s at fault and who pays for the escalating damages.

Caught squarely in the middle are the state’s electric companies, several of whom have been found liable for huge settlements when their equipment or negligence in maintaining it were blamed for costly fires. That has driven them to use a new tactic: blaming climate change.

Scholarship recipients are selected based on academic accomplishments, extracurricular activities involving leadership and community involvement, educational goals, career goals, and an evaluation by a teacher, counselor, or supervisor.
