In addition to the VoterVoice campaign that will be sent out shortly, CFCA is seeking members willing to author letters to the editor and op eds. We will assist with the writing and placement process but we need retailers who want their voices to be heard! All are welcome to participate, including those already operating in areas with flavored tobacco bans.

Please contact Sam Bayless (bayless@cfca.energy) if you are interested.

In less than a month, the NACS Foundation is uniting convenience and fuel retailers across America through its shared commitment to honor first responders, medical personnel and American Red Cross volunteers who work around the clock, 24/7, serving our communities to ensure people don’t face emergencies alone. The annual event helps raise awareness and donations for the urgent humanitarian needs of the American Red Cross and spotlights our industry’s critical role in supporting local heroes and the communities we serve.

Joining together, our 2020 24/7 Day partners are ampm, BP Fuels, CFCA (California Fuels and Convenience Alliance), ExtraMile, High’s, Huck’s, JJ’s, Kwik Chek, Loop Neighborhood Markets, Rutter’s, Sheetz (“Community Leader”), Shell, Thorntons, Wawa and Yesway. GSTV, the national video network entertaining targeted audiences at scale across tens of thousands of fuel retailers, was also named the official 2020 media partner. GSTV will promote broader foundation awareness, as well as support signature programs and initiatives like 24/7 Day via video content at fuel dispensers across the U.S.

As we move ahead to November and prepare for Californians to cast their ballots on myriad propositions impacting our state and your business, remember to educate your friends and colleagues on the issues coming their way.

This November, we will face the split roll initiative to raise your property taxes. We must make sure this initiative does not pass. With big financing from unions and Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg, this will be a challenge, but not impossible.

CFCA will be providing materials for you to help campaign against this dangerous proposition, but education is the strongest tool we have.

Read below for a breakdown of the initiatives headed our way in November.

In addition to our federally-based regulatory courses, we also offer a large slate of state-specific courses, bringing the added value of information on specific state and local programs and insights gained from our experience working with the local regulatory agencies.

Free CARB Regulatory Training in Your Area!

Do you own, operate, or dispatch heavy-duty diesel trucks in or to California? Then you need to know that the California Air Resources Board (CARB) enforces a set of air pollution regulations affecting all types of heavy-duty diesel vehicles operating in the State. If your vehicles are NOT already compliant, you need to know what to do to be compliant for 2019. And if your vehicles ARE compliant, you still may need to report to remain compliant. This course gives you the information you need about how to comply with CARB diesel regulations and how to report to continue operating legally in 2019 and beyond.

Upcoming Events

After careful consideration for the guidance set forth by federal, state, and local authorities regarding the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, the PFCS and CFCA Executive Committees have made the joint decision to cancel the upcoming 2020 Pacific Fuels + Convenience Summit. This decision was not taken lightly and was made with the utmost consideration for the safety and wellbeing of our attendees, exhibitors, and dedicated sponsors.

PFCS remains committed to presenting not only an irreplaceable opportunity for personal networking, but also ensuring our continued reputation for incredible hospitality that we have earned from our key stakeholders and sponsors. We encourage all sponsors, exhibitors, and attendees to direct monetary deposits for PFCS 2020 into PFCS 2021, which will be held September 7-9, 2021. However, we will absolutely honor any refund requests, as we understand businesses are facing unprecedented financial hurdles during this challenging time.

While this development is unfortunate, our top priority is, and always will be, the best interests of the people that make up our amazing industry. While we are disappointed we could not share all we had in store for 2020, our resolve to return even better in 2021 has never been stronger.

Thank you for your understanding and patience as we continue to navigate the challenges that 2020 continues to present for our entire industry. We cannot wait to see you all in 2021.

If you have any questions, or would like to secure your current booth space for 2021, please contact Amber Palmer at palmer@cfca.energy. For any further information, visit our website at www.petroshow.com.

The California Senate on Wednesday joined the Assembly in deciding not to return from its summer recess next week, citing the continued spread of the coronavirus, which has now infected several staffers and members in the Legislature.

The decision was announced on the same day that a second Assembly member, Republican Tom Lackey of Palmdale, acknowledged through a spokesman that he has tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

“Assemblyman Lackey has been hospitalized since Sunday for COVID-19 complications. He is receiving excellent treatment at Palmdale Regional Medical Center and anticipates a full recovery,” George Andrews, the assemblyman’s chief of staff, said in a statement.

A California environmental advocacy group urged the state's air pollution regulator and agriculture department to do more for minority communities in an annual report card it published last week.

That report card, compiled by the California Environmental Justice Alliance, issued environmental justice grades to eight agencies, with a statewide C average.

Six agencies received what could be considered a passing grade, A- to C-. Three of those six - the Geologic Energy Management Division and Departments of Pesticide Regulation and Toxic Substances Control - went from failing grades in 2018 to passing grades last year.

The California Legislature has seven weeks to process 700 bills. But with COVID-19 cases rising in the Capitol, it's unclear when lawmakers will return to the chambers.

Both houses were supposed to resume legislative hearings on Monday, beginning the last leg of the legislative calendar that ends August 31.

But the Assembly is now "closed until further notice" following six confirmed COVID-19 cases among lawmakers and employees, said John Casey, a spokesman to Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon.

In the past, you have explained that the gas tax was used for a specific reason, such as for road improvements.

Wednesday, I read your column, and under a complicated tax swap, money that had been marked for transportation now goes to public safety, local health and social services programs and city and county operations.

What the hell! Did the money for roads get hijacked? Again?

Slightly more than half (52%) of convenience store operators that sell fuel have not deployed chip payment card acceptance at any of their gas islands, based on a study by NACS technology affiliate Conexxus conducted Feb. 27- March31 this year.

Small retailers are struggling the most with chip card acceptance at the forecourt, primarily due to the high cost, the survey suggests. Vendors have said the cost of implementing chip cards at the fuel islands can easily run about $100,000 per site.
