Event and meeting professionals love bringing people together – obviously, it’s our job!

We plan meetings and events for a lot of reasons: likeminded professionals who want to network, a company retreat for employees to learn or people with a similar hobby or interest who just want to have a good time. But at the center of any event is the desire to be together and to learn from one another.

Because we’re so involved in the planning of these gatherings, I often wonder if we lose sight of how we ourselves can connect.

Being a leader in the industry means you have to stand out among the rest. The Meeting Professionals International (MPI) RISE Awards recognise people who do just that, celebrating those who have the spirit of leadership, impact and innovation.

We sat down with a few of the CMPs who were honoured with awards to talk leadership, careers and the future of the industry.

Tuesday, 30 July | 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. EDT/UTC-04:00

Gone are the days when meetings were a couple of projectors and a laptop. These days, even the smallest meetings and events are multimedia theatrical productions, with multiple projectors, stage lights and sound. Throw in LED walls, colorful scenic backdrops and multiple laptops, and you might have hundreds of power-hungry devices! Now add the trucks required for delivery and transportation for the crew, and audio-visual becomes a major contributor to your event’s impact on the environment.

How do you ensure you are using the best energy-saving equipment while limiting a carbon footprint?

Join our three AV experts to learn all of this and more while keeping money in your pocket.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Learn the various environmental impacts, from the obvious to the more subtle, when it comes to your design.

  • Walk away with concrete ways to reduce the environmental impacts and save money.

  • Understand what to look for in a sustainable AV provider as you contract future events

Panelists:

Will Curran, Founder & Chief Event Einstein, Endless Events

Brandt Krueger, Owner, Event Technology

Consulting Moderator – Angie Ahrens, CMP, Vice President, Operations, Leadercast

Global perspective
By Alejandra González, Directora, Eventos Sustentables

Human trafficking occurs in every country on the globe and affects people of all genders and ages. The World Day Against Trafficking in Persons occurs every year on 30 July, and we encourage all event professionals to become informed so that we can collectively take action and make it more difficult for traffickers to use events and hotels as venues for their crimes.

To help combat commercial sexual exploitation in the context of events and tourism, the Mexican meetings industry is taking action on the trafficking of children and teenagers.

It is with great sadness we write about the passing of Carol Norfleet, CMP, DMCP, on 15 June 2019. For many reading this, she has been part of your CMP journey.

Carol was known for many roles in the meetings and events industry. For more than 20 years she was with Destination Nashville, which in 2018 became PRA Nashville. With the transition of the company, she held a position on the national level for PRA.
