For our future, we must focus on sustainability

Sustainability is a term we throw around a lot in the events world.

There’s been a concerted effort to make what we do as events and meeting planners more environmentally friendly—from practices at events that conserve water or waste, to ethical farming that provides fair trade goods. But to really underscore why this is important, we need to understand why we’re shifting to more sustainable events.

The art of making meetings "green"

Nancy Zavada
believes events are windows into an organisation’s soul.

Zavada is the
president of MeetGreen, an organisation that works with companies worldwide to
lead event sustainability practices and produce conferences and events that
deliver targeted business results. Part of that means including environmentally
friendly practices that reflect the mission of the organisation or business
behind the event.

"The
responsibility for making wise choices, which impacts so many, is one of the
main reasons I started planning green meetings," Zavada said.

So how does
one make an event green? Zavada said the hardest part is getting started, but
once the ball is rolling, there are so many ways event and meeting planners can
make their events more sustainable.

Events Industry Council announces new Chief Executive Officer

The Events
Industry Council (EIC) has announced the appointment of a new Chief Executive
Officer after a global executive search process. An extensive
global search was led by executive search firm Vetted Solutions who worked
collaboratively with London-based Saxton Bampfylde in partnership with
SmithBucklin, EIC’s association management company.

The search
resulted in a pool of more than 50 highly qualified potential candidates from
around the world. Candidates were considered by an EIC board-appointed search
committee, consisting of an accomplished and diverse group of seven events
industry leaders chaired by Carina Bauer, CEO, IMEX Group. After the thorough
search process and consideration of several promising candidates, the search committee
chose Amy Calvert, who currently serves as Senior Vice President of Convention
Sales and Services with Visit Baltimore.

Since July of 2017, a team of dedicated sustainable event professionals has been working to redesign, rewrite and relaunch the sustainable event standards formerly known as APEX/ASTM. With the supplier sectors (accommodations, audio visual, destinations, exhibitions, food and beverage, venue) almost complete and the event organiser standard out for industry commentary, we will recap the journey of this industry-wide collaboration and talk about how the standards will bring innovation and impact to the event world, including a preview of the soon to be launched Event Organiser Standard.

Nominations open for Hall of Leaders and Pacesetter awards

The Events
Industry Council is now accepting nominations for the 2019 Hall of Leaders and
Pacesetter award. The Hall of Leaders is the premier recognition programme in
the events industry, recognising lifetime achievement. Inductees into the Hall
of Leaders are pioneers, influential, prolific and altruistic.

The
Pacesetter award celebrates emerging leaders and their present-day
accomplishments in three categories: 1) young professionals, 2) sustainability
and social responsibility and 3) leadership and innovation.

Induction
into the Hall of Leaders and awarding of the Pacesetter award will take place
in a gala celebration at IMEX America in Las Vegas.
