Recertification
Recertify Early and Save Money
If your certification expires in 2012, you still have time to send in your recertification application.  As you may know, recertification fees are now tiered.  If you submit your recertification application between now and August 31, 2012, your recertification will only cost $225.  Recertification applications submitted between September 1 - December 31 will carry a fee of $250.  Please make sure that your application reaches the CIC office by August 31 in order to take advantage of the lower fee.  If you have any questions about recertification, please check out our recertification video, our recertification tips or contact CIC at cichq@conventionindustry.org or by phone at 571-327-3116.

CMP at SAACI Annual Congress in South Africa
CMPs in South Africa had the opportunity to attend a special CMP Breakfast held in conjunction with the SAACI Annual Congress.  SAACI, the Southern African Association for the Conference Industry is one of CIC's newest international members.  CIC CEO Karen Kotowski spoke at the SAACI Congress on the Value of the CMP Certification and attended the first ever CMP Breakfast for South Africa CMPs organized by SAACI and sponsored by Nigel Walker of Complete Exhibitions.  She also presented CMP pins to three CMPs who earned their certifications in the last year.
 
Kotowski also introduced Chris Prieto as the new CMP Regional Representative in South Africa.  As announced in last month's newsletter, volunteer CMPs in various regions of the world will be CIC's eyes and ears on the ground promoting CMP to future candidates as well as creating communities of existing CMPs in the area.

Completing Your Professional Profile

Follow these easy steps to update your profile.
  • Log into your account at http://www.conventionindustry.org/Login.aspx
  • Important: If you are unable to access your account due to a change of email address, DO NOT create a new account.  Call the CIC offices at 572-527-3116 for assistance. 
  • Click the "Log in to Your Account" link in the upper right hand corner of the screen to access your personal information page.
  • Locate the new "Professional Profile and Interests" section and click "Edit".

  • Complete the Professional Profile, Industry Memberships, and Areas of Interest and click "Save".


  • Professional Profile – Basic demographic information including your industry sector and professional and educational experience.  Select only one occupational category among the Planner, Supplier and Other categories.
  • Industry Memberships – Completing this section will help CIC locate you in the event you change jobs or move and don’t update your official CMP records, as well as assisting  CIC in understanding the professional membership activities of CMPs.
  • Areas of Interest – Indicate all areas where you have or wish to develop a professional focus, skill or expertise. This will help CIC tailor content and programming of publications and events, and locate subject matter experts for future initiatives.
  • Publish My Contact Information - The certification status of all CMPs is published in the online CMP Directory. For privacy reasons, the directory by default includes no contact information. However, many CMPs have expressed the desire to have contact information listed so they can be contacted by colleagues and get business leads. CIC has added the ability to opt-in to having your contact information published in the directory. By leaving this box unchecked your contact information will not be listed. If you choose to opt-in to this listing, the contact information that is published is controlled in the "Individual Information" page listed under "My Information".

Share Concerns with Your Members of Congress on Legislation Affecting Meetings and Travel

The House and Senate have now adjourned for the summer and will not return to Washington until September 10. Legislation addressing the GSA scandal is still pending, but the association community, led by CIC member ASAE, has made considerable progress in letting Congress know about the industry's concerns on the unintended consequences contained in these proposals that would affect many association meetings and conferences and that would unreasonably restrict communications with federal agencies.

Here is a recap from ASAE on what has happened on this issue:

· In response to inappropriate spending on conferences held by the GSA, on April 25, 2012, both the House and Senate passed identical amendments as part of larger bills limiting federal travel expenses and increasing transparency of agency travel. Unfortunately, the legislation contained provisions with unintended consequences that would have affected many meetings and conferences held by associations and would have greatly restricted contact with federal agencies.

· In response to this legislation, ASAE sent an open letter to Congress with over 2,100 signatures expressing alarm and concern with the proposals. You can see this letter here. ASAE and our members met with Congressional offices explaining our concerns.

· The House Government Reform and Oversight Committee listened and incorporated our concerns by passing HR 4631, "the GSA Act of 2012". The bill is far less onerous to association meetings than the original language proposed in April. You can read our previous alert outlining the provisions of HR 4631 here.


While we have made considerable progress convincing Congress of our legitimate concerns, we are not out of the woods. The onerous provisions are still contained in two bills, S 1789, "the 21st Century Postal Service Act of 2012" passed by the Senate and HR 2146, "the Digital Accountability and Transparency Act of 2012" passed by the House.

Over the summer Congressional recess, we ask that you meet with your members of Congress to share your concerns on this issue. Nothing is more effective that personal meetings to show Congress the impact this issue has on the private sector. To help you convey the importance of this issue,
here is a one-pager on the value of face-to-face meetings.

We are confident that, in the end, we can prevent unreasonable restrictions from being enacted into law. But we must continue to educate Congress on this issue during the August recess and through the end of the year. Congress will consider some major bills during September and the lame duck period where the original proposals can still be considered.

CEIR Releases New Report, Use and Value of Face-to-Face
The Center for Exhibition Industry Research (CEIR) has released a report called "Use and Value of Face-to-Face," which is the first of a series of reports to be released over the next quarter from the landmark study, "The Role and Value of Face-to-Face Interaction." This study examines the long-term value of face-to-face marketing and exhibitions, the influence of major economic fluctuations, the influx of technology and alternative marketing tactics, including digital media. More than 9,000 attendees and 800 exhibitors participated in this initiative.

The first report provides an overview of attendee and exhibitor perceptions and perspectives of face-to-face interactions they engage in during normal business practices, including business-to-business exhibitions and other face-to-face interaction settings.  

Among the findings, both audiences rank exhibitions highest in terms of the value of face-to-face interactions from a list of 10 possible options including sales calls, exhibits, conventions, annual meetings, educational conferences with or without an exhibit component, hosted buyer events, sales calls, to name a few. For attendees, the exhibition setting is the top rated setting for face-to-face interactions, with 48 percent ranking it first over all other options. In-person sales calls are a distant second at 26 percent. 

CEIR Research Director Nancy Drapeau, PRC, said, "The results of this study, last conducted in 2002, validate the enduring value of face-to-face marketing and use of business-to-business exhibitions in particular. The economy has impacted exhibitions; however, study results point to a positive outlook moving forward."

Amanda Cecil, PhD, CMP Receives MPI's RISE Award for Member of the Year
MPI presented the RISE Award for Member of the Year to Amanda Cecil, PhD, CMP at a ceremony at MPI's World Education Conference. Cecil, a Certified Meeting Professional since 2001, was recognized for her volunteer leadership in the creation of the Meeting and Business Event Competency Standards (MBECS). Amanda chaired the MPI Body of Knowledge Task Force which was responsible for creating the MBECS, the first occupational standard for the meeting and event profession which is aligned with CMP International Standards. Amanda's volunteer activity with MPI includes serving on the MPI Indiana Chapter’s Board of Directors and work on international committees and task forces focused on students and knowledge.
