Events take a heavy toll on resources, society and the environment. They can generate significant waste, put a strain on local resources like water or energy and generate substantive amounts of carbon emissions. The Event Sustainability Management Systems, ISO 20121, launched in June 2012, are designed to help organizations improve the sustainability of their event related activities, products and services. Hear from Cascadia, performance improvement company, about their business case and challenges to implement and get the certification, how they set their goals and how they work to implement the system. You will also learn about the sustainability journey from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), a membership union composed of both government and civil society organisations and the global authority on the status of the natural world and the measures needed to safeguard it, how they improved their sustainability for their large international conference over the years leading into implementation and ISO certification of their IUCN World Conservation Congress 2020 in Honolulu, USA.

Outcomes:
1) Gain knowledge of ISO 20121 Event Sustainability Management Systems
2) Understand the framework as guiding principle of a systematic event sustainability management approach for your entire event management cycle and/or your organisation
3) Understand how using the standard increases value for your event or organization

Speakers: Randy Thorsteinson, Chief Operating Officer, Cascadia Motivation Inc. and Pamela Grasemann, Congress Manager, International Union for Conservation
