The Events Industry Council is seeking engaged events professionals for volunteer roles with the 2018 APEX Standards Committee, the APEX Sustainable Event Standards Re-Writing Committee and Sustainability Initiative sub-committees. The deadline for nominations is Friday, December 10, 2017. Selected APEX Standards Committee volunteers serve two year terms beginning January 1, 2018. Sustainability Initiative sub-committees will be convened for specific tasks and the duration will vary depending on the area of responsibility.

About the APEX Standards Committee

The Accepted Practices Exchange (APEX) is an initiative of the Events Industry Council that promotes development and implementation of industry-wide accepted practices to create and enhance efficiency throughout the meetings, conventions and exhibitions industry.

About the APEX/ASTM Environmentally Sustainable Event Standards

The standards, composed of nine individual standards (sometimes referred to as "sectors") addressing the scope of the meeting and event planning process, give meeting and event organizers a comprehensive roadmap for improving and measuring event sustainability on an ongoing basis. These formal, voluntary standards are focused around prescriptive actions, specific measurable targets for producing events in a more sustainable manner.

About the Sustainability Initiative

Formerly the Green Meeting Industry Council, the Sustainability Initiative is a program within the Events Industry Council to advocate and educate around sustainability in the meetings and events industry.

Description of Opportunities:

  • APEX Standards Committee: This committee is responsible for developing, identifying and maintaining best practices for the events industry. Focus areas for 2018 will include safety and security, cyber security, the value of the event professional, and maintaining current resources for room block poaching, connectivity, eRFPs, and other tools. Volunteers will participate in regular calls and one or two face-to-face meetings per year and should anticipate 5-8 hours of volunteer responsibilities per month.
  • APEX Sustainable Event Standards Rewriting Committee: This group will be responsible for updating the current APEX/ASTM Environmentally Sustainable Event Standards. This group will be meeting immediately following the PCMA Convening Leaders conference in Nashville in January. In addition, volunteers should anticipate 10-15 hours of responsibilities from January-August, 2018. Experience with implementing the standards is preferred for participating in this committee.
  • Sustainability Initiative Sub-committees: Volunteers will participate in the development of new resources for sustainable event education, including identifying potential speakers, writing articles and helping identify best practices related to sustainable events. Volunteers will participate in regular monthly calls and 3-5 hours of volunteer responsibilities per month. Travel is not anticipated for this role.
