Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month: Beyond the Calendar

Print this Article | Send to Colleague

Every September 15 through October 15, we mark Hispanic Heritage Month—a time to honor the histories, cultures, and contributions of Latinx communities. But if heritage months have taught us anything, it’s this: recognition should not be limited to 30 days.

Heritage months are powerful. They spotlight stories that too often go untold, and they remind us of the richness that comes from diversity. But they’re also a call to action—to integrate that recognition into the everyday fabric of our work.

Here’s why it matters: according to the U.S. Small Business Administration, Latinx-owned businesses have grown at more than double the national average over the past decade, now numbering over 5 million nationwide. Yet these entrepreneurs continue to face funding gaps, representation barriers, and systemic inequities.

So what does it look like to go beyond the calendar? It’s making sure our speaker lineups reflect Latinx voices not only in September, but year-round. It’s checking that our supplier lists include Latinx-owned businesses. It’s remembering that cultural celebration isn’t just about food, music, or décor—it’s about influence, leadership, and innovation.

This month, let’s celebrate the visionaries who’ve shaped our industries and communities. But let’s also commit to carrying that energy forward, so that when October 16 arrives, inclusion doesn’t fade into the background.

Because heritage is not a holiday. It’s history. It’s present. And it’s the future we’re all building—together.
