The CFPM is deeply proud of the fact that its current Board comprises of mainly women, and we are led by an exceptional president, Stephanie Playford.

In Canada there’s currently no shortage of inspirational female role models within the Podiatry/Chiropody sector. The CFPM would like to take this opportunity to recognize and thank three inspirational female Podiatrists/Chiropodists amongst our CFPM members. These amazing women have kindly allowed me to share their personal stories about being a woman in the Podiatry/Chiropody field.

Acute wounds heal by a progression through a complex, but orderly, series of physiologic and molecular processes. In contrast, chronic wounds, those that fail to heal within 30 days, are characterized as having stalled in this healing progression due to a variety of systemic and local factors. There is an increasing number of nonhealing wounds worldwide leading to significant morbidity and mortality with abounding economic ramifications.

Is technology important or is the technique? Regarding technology, the measurement that we are talking about is the assessment of ground reaction force. The typical equipment that is being used to measure this ground reaction force is a force platform. Force platforms are either strain gauges  or  piezoelectric sensors. These give you the 3 components of the ground reaction force: vertical, anterior/posterior, and medio lateral or side to side.

Foot orthoses (FOs) are commonly prescribed devices to attenuate biomechanical deficits and improve physical function in patients with musculoskeletal disorders. It is postulated that FOs provide their effects through the production of reaction forces at the foot-FOs interface. An important parameter to provide these reaction forces is their medial arch stiffness.

Muscle fatigue is defined as a reversible decline in performance after intensive use, which largely recovers after a resting period. Surface electromyography (EMG), ultrasound imaging (US) and dynamometry are used to assess muscle activity, muscle morphology and isometric force capacity. This study aimed to assess the convergent validity between these three methods for assessing muscle fatigue during a manual prehension maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC).
