SOURCE: Podiatry Today
Chronic wounds of the lower extremity are common complications of diabetic peripheral neuropathy and diabetes-associated peripheral vascular disease. Patients with diabetes frequently present with wounds that remain open for several weeks due to repetitive trauma related to a loss of protective sensation, glycosylation of the cells involved in the healing cascade, and macro- and micro-vascular insufficiency, which place the patients at a higher risk for infection and tissue necrosis.

Ask any woman who’s been through it, and they’ll easily confirm: Pregnancy is a life-changing event with numerous hormonal, physiological, morphological, functional, and biomechanical adaptations. Here we summarize and excerpt a round-up of recent research findings that show the impact of pregnancy on tendons in the lower extremity, on foot loading and plantar pressures in gait, and on morphological and postural changes in the foot, as well as the benefits of compression stockings during this unique period.

SOURCE: Journal of Foot and Ankle Research
Foot pain and structural foot disorders can impair mobility, particularly in older adults. Studies have found that that foot pain is associated with self-reported and objectively assessed reductions in mobility and weight bearing tasks, as well as reduced ability to perform instrumental activities of daily living (IADL). As a result, problems with foot pain and posture increase disability, reduce quality of life, and result in loss of independence.

Foot orthoses (FOs) are commonly used in treating injuries of the foot, ankle and lower extremity, to optimise foot mechanics and function and to provide cushioning and off- loading of foot structures. A wide range of FOs are currently employed in clinical practice and research. They typically form part of a multidimensional treatment perspective but are almost always considered a fundamental aspect of footwear advice.
