The condition known as pes planus has traditionally focused on a failure of development of the medial longitudinal arch of the human foot. Early studies of maturation of the arch of the pediatric foot indirectly measured arch height with footprint-based measures, utilizing ink blots or instrumented pedobarographs. While most newborns have flat feet, footprint analysis studies show a rapid increase of arch height in the majority of children occurring between the ages of 2 and 9.

Proprioception, which can be defined as the awareness of the mechanical and spatial state of the body and its musculoskeletal parts, is critical to motor actions and contributes to our sense of body ownership. To date, clinical proprioceptive tests have focused on a person’s ability to detect, discriminate, or match limb positions or movements, and reveal that the strength of the relationship between deficits in proprioception and physical function varies widely.

With the continued rise in prevalence of diabetes, diabetes-related complications including foot ulceration also increase. Infected ulcers are the main cause for diabetes-related hospitalization and lower-extremity amputation. Furthermore, approximately 40% of people with diabetes who heal from an ulcer will have a recurrent ulcer within one year. Therefore, prevention of (recurrent) foot ulcers is important.

Within the ageing population, foot and ankle restriction has been linked to specific patterns of increases in plantar pressure. For example, restriction in ankle joint dorsiflexion range of motion, referred to as an ankle equinus, has been associated with increased forefoot plantar pressures. Elevated forefoot pressures are likely due to contracture of the Achilles tendon, which in turn places increased loading on the forefoot during dynamic gait.
