Medical residents in a recent panel noted that exploring a wide variety of specialties during their residency helped them select their future focus. Additionally, panelists who feel their residency experience provided them deep exposure to foot and ankle pathology say that their comfort treating patients contributed to a smoother interview and networking process, and possibly even contributed to early success in their chosen settings.

Rehabilitation practitioners (eg, athletic trainers and physical therapists) regularly manage athletes who have sustained acute hamstring strain injuries (HSIs). The aim of HSI rehabilitation is to prepare athletes for return to sport (RTS) performance as soon as possible while also mitigating their reinjury risk. Athletes typically complete rehabilitation and RTS within 3 weeks of HSI; however, reinjuries frequently occur soon after RTS, and subsequent performance may be impaired.

First metatarsophalangeal joint (FMPJ) arthrodesis is a commonly performed procedure for symptomatic end-stage hallux rigidus (grades 3 and 4). The procedure can also be considered in selected cases of severe hallux abducto valgus (HAV) deformity associated with degenerative joint disease and as a salvage option for previously failed first ray procedures.

Lichen planus is chronic inflammatory mucocutaneous disease. Involvement of nails (nail lichen planus: NLP) could be the only manifestation or it could be associated with the other typical skin and mucous localizations. Typical NLP alterations are linear nail bed dyschromia, longitudinal ridging, splitting, onycholysis, and subungual hyperkeratosis. Pterygium could be observed in advanced stages. Treatment of NLP is challenging.
