Dave Fusaro, Editor in Chief, Food Processing magazine, will be the keynote speaker at Food Processing Expo 2023. His presentation will be “The Food & Beverage Outlook for 2023.” He will look at the changes and challenges for the food & beverage industry in 2023: business issues like the financial health of companies, supply chain problems, food safety and regulatory issues; product development ones such as changing consumer trends, the potential for plant-based foods and cultured meats; and manufacturing ones like labor and automation and how to attract and retain workers. Dave Fusaro has been editor in chief of Food Processing magazine since 2003. In 30 years in food journalism, he’s won national writing awards from the American Society of Business Publication Editors, has been interviewed on CNN, quoted in national newspapers and authored a 200-page market research report on the milk industry. Earlier, he was an award-winning newspaper reporter who specialized in business writing. Dave holds a BA in journalism from Marquette University.

Legislators were sworn into office on December 5, 2022. Lawmakers also convened Gov. Gavin Newsom’s special session on oil company profits, and then just as quickly adjourned it. Governor Newsom also unveiled the text of his proposal to enact a price gouging penalty on oil companies about two months after announcing his intentions. According to the Newsom administration, the bill would permit the state to fine oil refiners with “excessive profit margins” and funnel the penalty money back to Californians. But some of the bill’s most contentious aspects — including the size of the penalty and the definition of “excessive” margins — remain unclear and will have to be worked out in negotiations with the Legislature.
