CLFP held its Fifth Annual Capitol Day on June 17, 2014.  The day was very successful, and CLFP member companies had the opportunity to meet and converse with legislators and legislative staff.  This event gives member companies an opportunity to build relationships and educate policy-makers about the issues impacting the food processing industry.

The day began with a group meeting at the Capitol with guest speakers including Senator Jean Fuller (R-Bakersfield), Tiffany Roberts with the Senate Republican Caucus, and Arnie Sowell and Mary Kaimes with Assembly Speaker Atkins’ policy staff.

The following issues were discussed in the meetings with legislators and policy staff:

Food Labeling Mandates: CLFP members voiced their concerns about measures that would mandate a California-only labeling scheme for genetically engineered (GE) foods and sweetened beverages. They argued that such labeling requirements would provide misleading information and would ultimately result in higher food costs to consumers.

Groundwater Management Reform: CLFP members let policy-makers know that they understand the need to protect California’s groundwater resources.  However, it is important that any groundwater policy be part of a broader program that addresses surface water supply reliability and required financial support.  Member companies also stressed the need for local control of groundwater management and the need for strict criteria for state intervention.  They also voiced the need for local and regional agencies to manage groundwater in a manner consistent with existing property rights.

Onerous Employer Mandates: CLFP members voiced their concerns about the cost of doing business in California and said that the unreasonable employer mandate bills currently pending in the Legislature are burdensome, costly, and will expose employers to increased litigation.

The day ended with a legislative reception.  The event was well attended and gave CLFP member companies the opportunity to meet with legislators and staff in a more relaxed environment.

The member companies that participated in CLFP’s Capitol Day included: Campbell Soup Supply Company, Bolthouse Farms, SupHerb Farms, Kagome, Inc., Del Monte Foods, Inc., California Olive Ranch, The Morning Star Packing Company, Mooney Star, Olam Spices & Vegetable Ingredients, J.G. Boswell Tomato Company, and ConAgra Foods. CLFP looks forward to increasing participation in this event in the future.
