Capitol Update

The California Legislature reconvened on Monday, January 6, 2014.  This will be the second year of the two-year Legislative Session.  There are several important issues returning from last year as well as new issues yet to be introduced in 2014.

January will be very busy as the Assembly and Senate each work to meet a January 31 deadline to move measures that did not pass out of their respective houses last year to the opposite house. CLFP will be engaging on several of these measures as they rapidly move through policy and fiscal committees.

In addition, thousands of new bills will be introduced throughout January and February.  CLFP staff will review each of these measures and make determinations, with the assistance of the CLFP Legislative Affairs Committee, about the impacts these measures will have on the food processing industry.

Environmental issues will continue to be top priorities for CLFP in 2014.  It is expected that legislative reform efforts will carry on from last year for the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and possibly for Proposition 65.  Air and water quality in disadvantaged communities in the Central Valley will continue to be key issues for environmental justice advocates at the Capitol. And, water supply and conservation issues will be of critical concern in the Legislature and the Administration as we face a possible drought.

To keep up with the latest legislative developments and help guide CLFP’s policy direction, please join the CLFP’s Legislative Affairs Committee. Please contact Trudi Hughes at Trudi@clfp.com if you are interested in participating on this committee.
