With the release of its new report, "CO2 Building Blocks: Assessing CO2 Utilization Options", the National Coal Council (NCC) adds to its body of work on carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCS/CCUS). 

 

There is a growing consensus amongst industry, environmental groups, and governments that CCUS technologies for all fossil fuels (coal, natural gas, oil) will have to be deployed to achieve climate objectives in the U.S. and globally. Why? Population and income are driving increased demand for energy. Global electrification continues, and more than half of the increase in global energy consumption is for power generation. 

 

The world will continue to rely on abundant, secure, and affordable fossil fuels. Without CCUS, as NCC noted in prior reports, it is highly improbable that global CO2 emissions reduction goals will be met. Further, the projected costs of achieving these goals without CCUS will be much higher – 70 to 138 percent more expensive.

 

The U.S. enhances its chance of success in meeting CO2 emission reduction goals when it commits with urgency to the deployment of CCS technologies. That commitment begins with policies and incentives to level the playing field for CCUS. Upon this level foundation, the building blocks of CO2 utilization can be constructed to expedite reduction of CO2 emissions.
