Job vacancies reached more than one million in April, up 2.4 percent from March and up 44.4 percent from a year earlier, Statistics Canada reported. Businesses don’t see any sign of the situation abating. According to the Bank of Canada’s most recent Business Outlook Survey, the share of firms reporting labour constraints remained at a near-record high in the second quarter of 2022. Many businesses reported plans to raise wages to attract and retain workers.

To encourage businesses to invest in skills development, Quebec has taken its own unique approach. Since the early 2000s, small- and medium-sized companies, often working in the same sector, have had the option to pool their resources to deliver skills development options to their employees. The concept, known as “training mutuals,” could hold lessons for other Canadian provinces and territories.

“In the last year or so, we have seen $15 billion of private investment in the province,” said Saskatchewan’s new Highway Minister Jeremy Cockrill, who came to the cabinet post in June. The influx of new investments includes the largest potash mine development in the world and new forest industry manufacturing facilities and ventures.

“We know there is going to be more traffic on the highways and there is going to be heavier truck traffic,” he said, as the province looks to upgrade and improve its highway structure. “We know we have to make that investment of government to accommodate new industry.”

Halifax Water is showing residents just how harmful so-called flushable wipes can be to the wastewater system.

A photo from the utility shows a mass of rags and wipes clogging the Duffus Street pump station, shortly after crews had attempted to do emergency repairs by putting in a new pump.

It all began July 19, when Halifax Water said a pump failure had led to screened — but untreated — wastewater to be released into Halifax Harbour.

That prompted the utility to warn people not to swim in the harbour.

Do you remember the year 2007?

The third installments of the Spiderman and Shrek movie series were the top grossing movies of the year. Apple released the very first iPhone. And in November, the Saskatchewan Roughriders, led by quarterback Kerry Joseph, claimed their third Grey Cup with a victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in Toronto.

But there was also an especially important milestone in the world of public safety that year.

That’s because the Saskatchewan Common Ground Alliance (SCGA) was formed that year. We’re proud to be celebrating 15 years of a network of businesses and communities committed to damage prevention in our Province.

Past President Mike Sullivan recently sat down to chat with the chair of the Executive Committee of the Canadian Common Ground Alliance, Doug Lapp, to talk about this October’s conference. They recorded 26 of (newly titled) The Safety Moment podcast. Here’s a brief excerpt of the conversation.

The CCGA started a little over ten years ago and is made up of regional partners, which include the regional common ground alliances in each province, from BC to Atlantic Canada.
