Many years ago I’d love to read to my daughter. She would find a book that we enjoyed and read it together until the book would sometimes come apart in our hands. One such story was about a tiny engine who was small compared to the larger, sleeker versions. The engine was often ignored until the big night when no one else could take the crtically important cargo up the steep hill (the little engine couldn’t possibly make it – could it?). But "I think I can. I think I can" became "I knew I could. I knew I could."

When I raised the issue five years ago of focusing some of our attention on reducing our growing energy costs, one of my fellow vice presidents cautioned me and raised concerns about how faculty and others would perceive our intentions. Would they think that the college’s finances are so bad that we need to start cutting our energy costs? How bad can things be?
